So, I've got an oppertunity to get my hands on a D60 front axle for a pretty reasonable price, guy says it has the springs, pitman arm, track bar, and bracket, he also has the drive shaft for it. The truck it came out of was rolled. He wants 750 for the whole shooting match (Tom please correct me if I'm not spose to be putting prices up)
The biggest issue I see is its a 4.10 axle, and I really want to keep my 3.55's. I already know my D50 gearset won't work.
This would be a long term project, I would pry take the axle and re build it and make it fresh, probably a project for next winter (I need excuses not to drive my truck in the salt, lol)
I just rebuilt my D50, and I'm still getting a noise somewhere when I turn the wheel, thinking center bushings but I'm not sure, alignment shop didn't say anything was worn or out of spec.
So I guess my questions are, to anyone who has done this how difficult was it? I have read a couple of write-ups. 2. Is there really a noticable difference in ride, and 3, were you ultimatly happy with it.
I've been bouncing ideas off Aaron, I'm just scared to make the jump, I don't wan't to get took, and I hate supprises even more. I wasn't quite planning on this yet, but with this oppertunity before me I'm not sure if I should wait till I'm for sure ready, or get it and sit on it and tinker with it. Anyways, Ideas? Comments? Suggestions? and GO!
As stated $750 for everything is a very good deal in my area. I think I would go for it. If you are in no hurry to install, you could still look around of a D60 that had 3.55s and maybe work a trade.
I'll get ahold of the guy tomorow and see if we can work a deal. He has the drive shaft too but I think he's going to want a little extra for that as he is trying to sell them as a set.
I'm not going to restate it...but the ride will be better...but better yet with an rsk...woot woot..you can ride in clifford at rre and see if you like it.
Thomas, if the D60 was out of a '96 or '97 truck, you will also want to get the front yoke off the t-case for that front drive shaft. Yours won't work with the 350 drive shaft. If he doesn't have it, you will have to get one for a F350 and 4407 t-case. Here is the only place I could find a new one http://www.ebay.com/itm/4407-TRANSFER-CASE-YOKE-F5TZ7B214B-1330-CV/300996468910?_trksid=p2047675.c100012.m1985&_trkparms=aid%3D444000%26algo%3DSOI.DEFAULT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131230161411%26meid%3D4983815430688520342%26pid%3D100012%26prg%3D20131230161411%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D10%26sd%3D300839289700
Definitely get the front yoke off the t-case then. You will need it. Also get the 4" blocks for the rear end. The D60 swap is not bad at all to do. If you get the stuff and do the swap, I think you will like it.
Buy it, do a PMF RSK use SD springs at all four corners. Also get the anti sway bar for the front (and rear if you don't have). Rebuild at your leisure, get SD springs from auto wreckers to reduce cost. I sourced rears with the overloads on bottom of spring pack and installed air bags overtop on rears. Then install a borgeson mid steering shaft and Red head steering box. Worth the effort and expense.... Yes you'll have a wicked handling riding truck. Thing is you don't have to do it all at once. When done you'll be cheering. Don't know anyone.... Anyone... That has said these modes aren't worth it.
Could/would it be worth trying to make the existing front shaft work? Like take it to a drive shaft shop and have the necessary mods done? Seemed like I read you could do that, I just don't know which would be more cost effective.
While you wait for the next deal to come along take the opportunity to replace (or upgrade to stainless braided) brake lines. I was shocked to see how tight my factory lines were with the truck lifted during a tire rotation. I put longer ones on knowing a minor lift was in my future. Also it may be a good time to replace your calipers or rebuild them if you are so inclined. The D50 calipers are interchangeable with the same year D60. So the effort of changing brake lines and fresh brake fluid will be a chore behind you when you do the swap.
Swapping in some SD springs in the rear, or installing the 4" F350 blocks, may also be a chore you tackle ahead of time. If this causes a change in the rear pinion angle you may get a shudder at take off. You can futz around with this ahead of time too.
I am planning on putting a D60 In the front on my 97 as soon as it warms up some n the snow melts so I can get to it. 9 degrees rite now in lower mi.
never thought about the super duty springs. I have a set from a lift I put on a 2000 f250. do these bolt it or do you have to use 97 main spring and add the other to it. Is the purpose for a better ride
