The mice in the squirrel cage under the hood don't like to work so hard, so they squeal. You can cure by feeding them more. Joke over.
Several things come to mind. Accessory drive belt. Broken motor mounts allowing the engine/transmission to shift or move causing rubbing against fan shroud or other. A camshaft position sensor that it on its last legs. Harmonic noises from the air intake system. Bad throwout bearing.
Tell more about the vehicle.

Reason: cranks vs cam sensor fix
Good joke!!! Well not to sure what more i can say expect, does sound like noise is coming from air cleaner box... But recently I have changed tension pulley, idler pulley and serpentine belt(belt three times, due to after a couple of months starts to squeal). Also on initial start-up belt squeals loud for bout 1 or 2 seconds...Hope this helps you help me...
That sounds like a slipping serpentine belt. Right after you start the engine, the alternator will start to work hard to re-charge the battery, and will have more resistance to rotation as it works harder. After a bit of time, it has recharged enough to cut back on its output, and doesn't squeal any more. I'd put a voltmeter on the battery, before starting, and then note the voltage after startup, and after the squeal goes away. If things track, I think I would be inspecting the alternator. You can check the alternator bearings somewhat by removing the belt, and rotating the pulley by hand. If it is difficult to turn, or feels 'rough', then you might need to replace it.
Did you buy an aftermarket tensioner? It may not be tightening properly. I put a Goodyear Gator serpentine belt on my Ranger, and it inititally squealed a bit as described above. It has 'segmented' Vee's, so does not have a 'full face' contact with the pulley grooves. I tightened just a bit more, and it quit making noise. It has a manual tension adjustment.

I have a 1999 Ford Ranger xlt V6 4.0L 4X4 pick up truck. My radio cuts out only in reverse. The only thing I repaired is a dash bulb light . I replace the dash light bulb and put it back together. I have never been on forum before so I hope some can see this message. I never encountered problem like this one. Before the 1999 Ford Ranger I had a 1997 Ford Ranger XLT 2 wheel drive 2.3L and never had a problem changing out dash light bulbs.
