So with the summer months coming up I figured I would freshen up the air conditioning in my truck. I replaced a discharge line from the compressor to the condenser due to a leaking crimp... After all squared away the system holds 30 inches of vacuum now for about 4 days. Question is the truck was converted to 134A, I do have a full size AC the Machine at my disposal at work :-). I figured I could charge it and just read my pressures or does anybody know how much these systems hold when they are converted? Like: 1lb 1.5lbs 2lbs...
85 6.9 IDI
My 87 is 2.75lbs of R12, you use a little less with R134 about 85% of capacity or your ideal pressures. I did the upgrade last year and put a condenser in for R134 heard they were more effecient. Had to have a line made. Measured wrong. Had to have a second line made and after the boss and employee argued about which fitting to use (boss won) got my line installed. Noticed over the winter all my R134 leaked out at the fitting. So I will be replacing a line. I put in 2.5lbs and it was cooling pretty good. I also used a varible rate orfice tube. I diddn't really get a chance to test it out as it was the end of summer. I was replacing my radiator and wanted to do the condenser at the same time.
Thanks guys, got it all charged up.. few issues, high side pressures looked good between 220-245psi, low side was 20-30psi and drop to zero... I added some, didn't make a difference. Took some out, same pressures... I think I am kicking myself in the ***, I I had the receiver out and didn't replace the orfice tube. So it is acting like a orfice tube to me simply because my high side pressure are good and no matter how much I add or take away 134a on my low side always drops down to zero, not into a vacuum but to 0
Well I think I have bigger problems now lol, I just removed the orifice tube and it looks like this
I pulled the rest of the hoses off and look down into the compressor as well.. I think I had a receiver drier come apart.. If it's not one thing it's another, oh well I have another used good compressor that I will use and I just ordered a receiver drier. I just flushed my evaporator and condenser as well and blew out with compressed air
that is called black death. it is what you get when you put R134-A in a R-12 system without completely cleaning the system of anything to do with the R-12.
Yep that's about what it looks like. When I bought the truck the AC was cool but never cold, now I know why. No big deal flushed it and changed o rings
Actually that looks like moisture mixed with your compressor oil and some contamination. Probably diddn't vacuum the system down when previously converted. Black death is originally a GM thing, also aftermarket, and came from using sub standard hoses. Hence the "black". Good you got it figured out. Edit... Yes it does look like an aful lot debris mixed in there. Good call!....Edit. I would take your compressor off when you flush and pour some ac solvent in it and slosh it around spin the pulley and pour out a couple of times.

Reason: add
I've changed the ac gas on mine cause the ac pump on my 1993 f350 7.3idi failed and the mecanic at ford said that to to a lasting change, you will need a new ac compressor new condencer, orfice tube and a new ac gasket sealant set, i would check what kind of ac compressor you got beacause some of the orginal ac compressors from ford was not made for r134. And there is a difference in oils for gas r12 and the r134 just so you know. Just make a search on google and see for you self..
I bought it all exept the oil and gas from rockauto and it was cheaper with postal and tax than to by some aftermarket kit that may not last.. juat saying..
Hopes this helps btw..

Reason: type error
So an update on my a/c, after flushing my evap core and condenser, & lines.. oh and a new compressor because the clutch was shot, new receiver/drier... installed a new orifice tube, charged up to about ~2.50lbs of 134a and using correct oil.... nice and cold air from the vents pressures were: high side 175-200, low was 30-34. Outside air temp was about 80°f, now I'm working on upping the flow out of the vent, if its not one thing its another lol love this truck
