I have a 2013 FX4 that I picked up 3 weeks ago and yesterday after washing it I noticed the front bumper didn't look quite right. I am not 100% sure anything like a vent was ever located here but it sure looks like some type of insert was in place before due to the slots.
Can anyone with a similar truck tell me if I am missing something here and if I am where can I find the part number. The more I look at this, the more out of place it looks to me. I have searched the new trucks online and some have something here and some don't.
The slots in the bottom of the opening (and there are tabs on the inside top) are for a license plate bracket. Since you have an EcoBoost, a while back the plate bracket was relocated to the LH side (replacing the bumper pad). Thought being ... more air flow to the intercooler. *Verdict is out as to a negative affect of any restriction (even slight), though several have installed lower grilles with no issues -AND- they protect the intercooler from being damaged by road debris.

The "some have something and some don't" is the result of an owner installing a lower bumper grille or just leaving it open. *There are SEVERAL after-market offerings ... e.g. search ebaY®

Here are pics of the insert that gDMJoe showed up there. Bought it from the dealer and installed on my '13. It's just a nice OEM look that cleans up the gap on all 11-13 EBs. Worth the $45 I paid as it looks much better.
