Noticed something odd with transfer case..

After I got the interior back together and the shifters re-installed, I noticed something odd about the transfer case shifter. It may be that it has always been like this and I didn't notice it, but it seems like there are 6 distinct 'notches' in the shift pattern.

All the way forward is 2H, then I assume 1 notch back is 4h, then N then 4l.

There are some extra 'notches' that I can't account for. It has a long throw, all the way forward to all the way back.

Now, I haven't driven it since the reassembly, but the transfer case shifter seemed pretty simple to re-install.

Any thoughts on this? Am I missing, or misunderstanding, something?

Assuming it is an NP208, your pattern is correct. But, there should not be 6 notches. However, is that with the engine running? That makes a difference on mine.

It was with the truck off. I don't know how it would make a difference but I'll test it with the truck running today.

I checked the xfer case again today with the truck running. It didn't make a difference.
All the way forward is, I assume, 2H based on the shift pattern. I pull it pack, there is a small notch. Pull it back a little further, there is what feels like a little bigger notch and the 4x4 indicator comes on. I assume this is 4H.

Pull it back some more. Small notch. Pull it back again, larger notch. Assume Neutral

Same pattern again, small notch, larger notch, 4L I guess.

In looking at the exploded view of the NP208, it looks like there is a selector shift plate and a ball/plunger that provides the shift points (notches).

I'm wondering if that shift plate is worn or something is going on with the spring / plunger and not providing enough tension.

If it's the shift plate, that means pulling it and a rebuild.. argh..

Thoughts?

The "fingers" that move the gears in the 208 are known to wear and cause odd shifting. When I bought Rusty nothing worked quite right on it. I could find 2HI, and 4LO by pulling the lever the whole way each way, but 4HI and Neutral were not right and almost impossible to find or keep. I had it rebuilt and those parts replaced as they were toast. Problem solved.

I was wondering about a rebuild. I rebuilt the xfer case on my '63 myself, but time is an issue on this one. What did it run you to have it rebuilt?

I know I can buy a rebuild unit for about $600 but If I can just drop it off and have someone else do the work for less I'd go that route.

I paid $300 to have it rebuilt. And he replaced everything that wears for that. In fact, when I picked it up I asked him whether it should go in Rusty or Dad's truck, and explained that Dad's is the keeper but that the t-case in it has rarely been used. He said that I for sure wanted to go with the rebuilt one since he knew is was essentially new.
