I own a 1995 F350 crewcab with a 5.8l engine.Problem: with the truck loaded with gear and pulling a 19 foot boat, uphill, my wife and I heard noises from the engine compartment. We stopped to check it out.The exhaust manifolds were so hot they lighting up the road around the wheel wells. Lucky for us, no fire resulted. Anyway,we let it cool down and decided to turn around and come back home.I thought maybe I had a plugged cat.Had it checked and it was ok. The truck has 161,000 miles on it .It starts and runs fine around town. Any ideas would be very helpful?

How did they check the cats?I remember reading a post on here about a guy who had his cat's checked at one place using temperature difference and they said it was ok.He pulled them apart and they were plugged.If the cats are restricted the truck should be sluggish.It could be a valve leaking,you could have fuel burning in the exhaust or the truck could be running real rich and the un burnt fuel is burning in the exhaust.The timing could be retarded.I would check the computer codes and maybe do a compression check and check the timing.
