Starter spin
Goodmorning! We just purchased our 2001 5.4 ltr expy 2 months ago. It has approx 48k. At least once a week when you go to turn the key the starter spins and grinds. It is the same sound you hear when your wife tries to start the car when its already running. Ya all now the sound.... so if its not already running why is it doing that? Is there a few teeth missing on the flywheel?

My guess is it's more likely a sticky throw-out mechanism -- the assembly that pushes the starter gear into engagement with the flywheel and withdraws the gear from the flywheel when the starter is released. I don't know how hard the starter is to get out, but if it were me, I'd pull the starter and check there first.

Right, it sounds like the bendix drive is sticking. I would fix it quickly, as you are grinding the flywheel teeth everytime this happens. I don't think you want to replace the flywheel if you don't have to.

They should replace the starter and you'll be good to go...hopefully for more than 48,000 miles this time, although all mechancial parts are subject to failure at any time.
