Question iPhone Apps?

I'm looking at the ELM327 OBD2 adapter for my truck, and I'm looking at iPhone apps that are available, and I was wondering what other folks were using? I know folks with Androids are using Torque Pro with the ELM327 adapter, but I'm an Apple guy.

So for the other geeks and techies out there, any suggestions on what I should get?

DashBoss App uses it's own Bluetooth Gateway.

Haven't heard of any apps anywhere near as good using a standard ELM adapter.

I hooked up the ELM327 ($13.00 +/-) transmitter in conjunction with the TorquePro app ($4.97) and am pretty pleased so far. Real time data on coolant temp, boost, oil temp, voltage, etc. and was pretty amazed at the list of available parameters to be monitored. It took a little playing around to set up some of the gauges and I don't know if I have the ability to set up more as it gets a little technical on some available beyond the norm. No issues with the ELM transmitter. Actually nice that I can hit the car starter in my house and check on coolant temps to see if it's warm enough to go out there. I can't speak to any of the other systems out there.

The TorquePro app is what I'd like to use, but there isn't a version available for iPhone. It's apparently for Android only. I do have an old iPhone 4 that I could jailbreak and dual boot Android on, but I'd rather find something native to iOS if possible. If I can't find anything worthwhile, I'll just jailbreak the phone tonight and get it setup to use TorquePro. I ordered the ELM327 a few minutes ago from Amazon, so hopefully I can have the phone ready to go before the ELM327 arrives and be ready to roll when it gets here.

Bullit gave you the answer, dash boss, with the he kit for EGT and fuel pressure, use the old iPhone you have as a permanent mount.

As with anything Apple, a generic (non Apple approved) ELM adapter is likely to not even appear on your list of available Bluetooth connections on your phone. DashBoss has it's a own proprietary Apple licensed adapter that works pretty well. Check the App Store for other available software (there are several). Out of curiosity, I downloaded some of these apps and none of them I tried worked with the DashBoss's Bluetooth adapter. I will say DashBoss is a solid, stable interface with a lot going for it including the option to record and graph data sessions and export them, as well as good code reading ability, and it's expandable to add sensors that are not factory installed on your truck, like fuel pressure and Exhaust Gas Temp. Many of us here at FTE have it and can recommend it. I'm not sure about the other available options for iPhone.

I have been looking into this as well and have decided to wait until Scantool's MX wifi becomes available later this spring. I like the small form factor and A buddy of mine uses their MX for android and it looks very good. Price point should also be less than the "BOSS".

The other cheap and small wifi units get way too hot.

I do not work for them nore do I know anyone who does

I haven't jailbroken my old phone yet, but as I'm writing this I have it hooked up to my PC and I'm about to do just that. I'm not going to jailbreak my 5s since it's only a week old, but the old iPhone 4 I have is a perfect candidate and I'm looking for a permanent mount right now for it.

The Apple Bluetooth stack doesn't work well with any of the adapters that are out there, at least not natively. Nearly all of them require WiFi, but you run into the problem of other devices having the same MAC address and disabling your connection if they're in range of your device. Not really a big deal, as you just have to find the right device to use.

I ordered the X-Series ELM327 WiFi OBD-II scanner adapter that stated it was specifically for iPhone/iPad/iPod touch, but I got a message from the seller stating it was out of stock and asking me to please cancel the order.

Oh well, looks like I'm going to get something different.

If DashBoss is like the Mustang GT500 of the OBD world, why cobble together a kit car running a VW Beetle engine just to save $50?

Running wifi will get you away from iOS's fussyness with Bluetooth and jail broken opens up quite a few more apps. Post back if you find somthing that works well. As far as I know you'll be the guinea pig as far as FTE posters.

None of those OBD apps even come close to what torque can accomplish and DB is capable of more.

I jailbreak every iOS device, but to go to that trouble to use those $90 apps and gateway is retarded.
