Impressive bunch here. So question #2, I'll try to get a pic up as soon as it stops pouring rain as well. New to me 84 F250, 460/C6, a/c, cruise control, no power windows etc.
Passenger side front outer edge of the intake maniford there is a small black box, about 1"x1". Its layed on its side with wires coming out towards the fender. One white, one red and a black or green, cant recall. Anyhow for some reason the red is hooked now directly to the battery+ (not factory I dont think) the white has been spliced into a factory green wire coming off the alt I think? any ideas? I despise shade tree wiring jobs and need to clean up the ones I can. Was thinking relay maybe, but its completely sealed on bottom like poured in sealer and Ive never seen a relay sealed like this.
Good morning to you too. Try to be a little more concise next time with pics.
You're right, I'm sorry, that didn't come out quite right and I didn't have time to fix it, so I just now deleted all those posts to make the thread appear happy.
You should really trace the wires to get an idea of what it might do, it sounds like a relay. If you post pictures, maybe somebody will recognize Bob, The Mystery Part.
I tore into the under hood gremlins Saturday and traced the wires back to the heater element for the choke, and the mystery box is a relay for it.. If im not mistaken originally the 4180 should was a hot air choke and its been converted when the carb was replaced?.
I found a pic of the choke element and relay on a aftermarket parts website. Never occurred to me as every vehicle Ive owned either ran, or I ran the choke off the 12+ side of the coil or a cable . Never figured a relay was needed for such low draw.
If it is indeed coming off the alternator, they may have used the alternator to trigger the relay to send a full 12v to the coil in the choke.
The factory used the "s" terminal off the alternator to run their electric assist chokes, but it only puts out about 7 or 8v. They did this so the choke would not start pulling off until the engine was actually running.
If you went out in the morning to start the truck, turned the key on and right at that moment your wife asked you a question and interrupted the whole sequence and you left the key in run while dealing with her, when you got back to the task at hand the truck would never start since the choke was heating up the whole time the key was in run.
Just an example.
Gm hooked their electric chokes through a oil pressure switch for the same reason.
That's the way I have the e-choke set up on Rusty. A Bosch-style relay pulls in nicely from the S terminal and puts battery voltage to the choke. Works great.
