7.3 no start

hi guys, i wanna thank everyone in advance for any help.

my father in law has a 2000 psd with 560,000 miles on it and was at the bank the other day and it sputtered for a sec and died. today i finally got around to tinkering with it and found a small amount of smoke coming out of the exhaust while cranking, and it trying to start once while we cranked on it.

what i have done is pulled the icp, still no start, i left it unplugged for testing purposes. cleaned the ipr, and replaced the solenoid magnet deal on the ipr with mine off my truck. and also hooked up a hpop gauge. caped one of the hpop lines and put the gauge on the other. i hit 1500psi pretty quick and then stopped cranking. then i hooked the driver side line back up and saw 1000psi on the driver side before i stopped cranking. it tryed to start with the driver side bank receiving oil only. switched sides and same deal but this side maxed out at 1000psi on this side and also tryed starting with only the pass side getting oil. so i hooked everything back up and am only getting 500psi. im thinking i may have a blown injector o-ring??? what is everyone else thoughts. i also got a p1212 code. and a idm and pcm non communication which i cleared and only the p1212 came back.

thank you all for your help.

It certainly has an O-ring odor about it. Good job on diving in.

That WAS a good job narrowing it down that fast. I'm interested to see what happens, especially with that milage. Whats the trucks maintenance history?

thank you all for the reply's, i am going to buy ae soon being as i plan on keeping to a 7.3, dad has a 6.0, and my father in law has a 7.3, but i will look to see if that code was thrown, i have them written down at his house. all the codes that were throw were related to icp pressure. i have done allot of work on my dads 6.0, and my old motor got a cavatated cylinder so i did the injector o rings and made my own tools to do the injector cups hoping it was that, so i have a good understanding on how the trucks work. but i figured 500psi the truck would start? as far as we know with vehicle maintenance it was well maintained, not immaculately maintained but well maintained. it was a rv mover and is actually in very good shape. hes had the truck for a year or so. i am going to take the valve covers off and see if any of the injectors are leaking around the base of them. i am also going to see what each head will max out at for hpop psi to maybe narrow down what head might be more likely to have the injector leak? thank you again for the help everyone.

The Cody test will help tell if it is leaking into the valve cover are but if the o-ring separateing the fuel from the has fail, it will be impossible to hear.

Use a rubber tipped air gun to pressurize the head and listen for air leaking under the valve cover.

So i just got done with the truck got 600psi initially then faded to 500psi with the icp unpluged and both heads getting oil and guage hooked to pass head. I got 800psi on pass head with the driver head line undone and plugged. Hooked the guage to the hpop on the driver side line and plugged the pass line got 1200psi with icp unplugged. Plugged it back in and instantly shot to 3200psi. Hooked driver side line back up and got 0psi with and without the icp plugged up. Which is wierd because i got 1000psi yesterday... i dono though cause i undo the guage and get a pop of pressure and same when i unhook the hpop line. So i pulled the injectors and found 2 bad orings but it was the bottom orings (fuel)... got new orings on the way.. any thoughts?

You might have found your issue.
That would be the second truck this year.

how would the bottom oring cause a low oil pressure? granted i guess it should have started with 500psi of hp oil. so maybe with the two lower orings being bad fuel was just dumping into those two cylinders creating the little bit of smoke we were getting? it does try to start with the driver side head oil blocked off and yesterday the same with the passenger side blocked off. now today i get oil pressure on the driver side line but once i get the line connected back to the head and the gauge hooked up to the middle dummy plug i get no oil pressure? and it will not try to fire? this is kind of stumping me. when the orings come in i will get them all in and report back. if anyone has any ideas of why i may not be getting oil pressure in the pass side now or oil coming out of the injectors please let me know.

a little late than never but here are the codes i got (superchips)

p1280
p1670
p1209
p1212
p0340
p0470
p1211

now the code that i am a little concerned with is the p1670 i am going to check that out some more recheck fuses and check the relay with mine. i also got a spare idm i may throw in there is that does not work once i get the injectors back in. anybody have any experience with the 1670 code? all the other codes seem to point to a low icp pressure which could be because of the six gun chip that is on there?
