Driving home yesterday I blew out one of my front wheel bearings. No real warning, I'm sure it was making noise but I can't hear it over the engine and tires. I got it home with no real damage (except the bearing) and just wanted to take this opportunity to remind everyone to check their bearings. I should've checked ALL of my bearings when I started driving this truck, I guess I just didn't think of it.
Do you have spindle bearings? Dont forget to do those
I was wondering about that and was going to ask... I do not see any spindle bearings, should there be on this axle? It's a 79 Dana 44 high pinion. If there is supposed to be a spindle bearing there, it got eaten too
Edit: There has to be a spindle bearing. There's no way that it wouldn't have one, would it make sense that that got messed up too when the inner bearing went out?
Okay forget that post^, I figured that out. Another question I forgot to ask... Does anyone know what this part is called? The shiny/broken ring around the base where the spindle bolts are.
That's what I thought too, but it's larger in diameter than the new seal is. Unless it's possible that the seal I got is just a little different? I know that I have the right seal though.
Nice job on that bearing.
Here is the most easily understandable exploded view I have seen on D44s.
Should help you to ID everything.
Good luck. Need a HP Dana 44 diagram
It looks worse in picture but I'm going to replace it anyway since it's already off.

It wasn't easy to do! Thanks for that diagram though, I had been searching for a good one.

As she awaits new bearings:
Yeah thats a bitch at least it didnt cease to the spindle like it did me haha
Just a inner and outer set of bearings, that might or might not come with new races? It looks like whats left of a tap in inner hub grease seal to me on the spindle.
How are your hub races? You can get the rotor turned you know? And do you have a 4 pin hub socket, great investment for the reinstall.
And a free safety note: Try to make a habit of putting the tire once it comes off under the radius arm/bracket as a back up free jack stand.
