Are you opposed to a box bolted down in the bed?
After cramming speakers, backpacks (with first aid supplies), toilet paper, jackets, umbrellas, handywipes,
extra clothes and phonebooks behind the seat and under the seat, there is not much room for anything else.
All other tools end up in a bed box or some type of auxiliary box.
(well my trucks have always been used for work)

I've got subs behind my bench seat, so no storage there. I keep a deep tool box in the bed. It's only a foot wide, but it gives me just enough tool/supply storage without taking up much of my bed space. I've been considering getting a camper shell top for use during the winter to keep ice/snow from sitting in the bed, but seeing as it's almost spring time again it wont happen any time soon. I may get one next fall though as it would be VERY helpful for keeping stuff out of the weather. Then again, I may just end up storing too much stuff in there because it'll be so much easier, haha.
