Hello everyone, i am very new to this forum and also new to the 7.3 idi in my truck. it is a 1991 ford f-250, 2wd, non turbo'd i know a little bit about it but not enough. recently, I've noticed that when i turn the key, the glow plugs aren't pulling any power and the truck isn't starting. even though the wait to start light goes off. I first thought it was the controller but i have no idea. If anyone could help me with this it would be greatly appreciated!!
does the wait light stay on for 5 sec? if not need new glow plugs(some?) check the wires to glow plug cont. sometimes they burn up at the connector 1/2 way back 2 the battery
I would go ahead and replace all 8 glowplugs with Motorcraft plugs and also replace the glow plug controller relay. You'll spend under $200 in parts if you do it yourself...I have zero mechanical chops and I was able to figure it out with the help of the friendly folks on this board on a Saturday afternoon. I just bought a 1990 7.3 IDI last week and just went through this....very hard starts and downright impossible to start if it would sit for any length of time. I replaced the GPs and GP controller and then ended up having to replace the injection pump...knock on wood, its running well. With all of that said, Im not a mechanic and will defer to the folks on here that have the knowledge to diagnose based on the description you supplied. Good luck.
