I've been having steering issues for awhile now and I'm wanting to replace my rod ends. I've been reading reviews on who's who get and have not come up with a solid answer. Funds are low right now so I don't need the best of the best, I can always upgrade later when I'm doing a little better. I would like to replace all the rod ends but have come to the conclusion that I don't think I'm going to be able to do them all at once like I'd like to.
I did replace the rod end coming off the pitman arm and all was great for about two weeks. I believe the new one pushed the opposite side over the edge (I know bettter not sure what I was thinking).
Looking online I'm not exactly sure what I need to buy. Any help on that would be greatly appreciated. I'm at the point that it's not very comfortable driving the truck now. I will get a redhead steering box but not before I replace all the rod ends to be sure my steering box is shot. 149.4 pound rim and tire is killing the front end parts... Obviously. I have a solution to this but that's another thread another time. Thanks
I've replaced all my tie rods and drop links on my 2WD with parts from NAPA, and went with the better of their options. I have also found that if you ask for a discount, you will typically get at least 10% just for asking. On my suspension parts, the manager has gotten to know me and I guess he likes me because he actually gave me 40% off on the whole package. I've put over 20K miles on those parts at this point and have had no issues whatsoever.
Same here... napa ends...
I did replace the drag link a few months back with an 80$ one off ebay...
It tightened the slop up quite a bit but i fear my steering box is on its way out.
At this rate ill never get a new set of injetors...
I went the XRF route through Tire Club. Supposed to have a lifetime warranty, we'll see how that goes. I have yet to install them, waiting on decent weather.
i'm interested in these answers also. i been looking at some moog stuff but it appears they make a light duty and a heavy duty. so be careful when ordering online. my xrf ball joints are still doing fine after about a year, i may look into them aswell.
I did do a search before I started this thread and everything seemed to be hit and miss as far as reliability goes. I only drive 35 miles round trip and haven't been using the truck like it's intended us and before I start beating on it again I'll be upgrading a lot of things but for now it is what it is, and that why I say it doesn't need to be the best of the best to get me by for now.
I'm also confused on which parts are needed and I don't want to order the same part twice not knowing exactly what I'm looking at
John, do a search using "XRF" as your search term and you'll get a ton of testimonials about the suspension parts.
That being said, Pete just installed a Redhead in my wife's Excursion for me but I had to replace the drag link end off the pitman arm. I went with a the high end Napa part for $50 bucks.
Another one for XRF. I ordered the whole package and had great results. Even if it is out of your budget, bookmark it for further reference. The Tire Club
It's bookmarked, thanks. Is there anything else that should go hand in hand with doing the tie rod ends? My ball joints are still in good shape and like previously said I have no idea what kind if shape the steering box is in and won't know until everything else is working properly
With 38" tires and a tight budget, I would check each rod end for play and replace what's nessecary. Then save up for a steering box from West Texas Off-road. You can order one that has been drilled and tapped for a Redneck Ram, then when funds allow, you can add the ram later. That was the best mod I did to my truck and the steering has been nice and tight for 30k miles now. The ram shares the load with the rod ends and they'll last much longer, and if you do have a failure, you'll have redundancy in the steering to keep you from going off of the road and over a cliff.

While you are in there you might as well check all your bushings. I replaced my track bar bushings and that alone made a big difference.
If you go with Moog,Rock Auto has very good prices.
I myself bought all new inner & outer Moog problem solver parts from RockAuto for about $250. They did have the best price on Moog. Now for ball joints I am going to get XRF from Tire Club.
