Can I Make This Work?

Went to the salvage yard and found a couple of axle code 17 off of a 1981 and a 1984. This turns out to be the 2.47 ratio which is what I want. But I also found a code 12 on a 1990 that looks to be in a lot better shape. My question is will this 1990 bolt up to my F250 with manual transmission? If it does not fit without modification I will go with the older code 17 from the 81 or 84 model. Opinions as to how to proceed are sure welcome. Richard

Depends. Are these factory Dana 60 axles or the Ford 9 inch? I think the Dana's will not be too much of a problem. If you are just grabbing the ring and pinion, inspect them carefully.

The code 17's are Ford as well as the code 12. Presently it has a code 29 Ford. (3.55 ratio) And they are 8.8 inch as well as I can tell.

To answer the second part of your question, i am getting the complete rear assembly. I want to roll it out from under one truck and roll it under mine. I realize it probably can't be that easy.

If you take everything, then it generally is. Wheel studs to wheel studs. Take the drive shaft too. As long as you match the transmission and/or transfer case output shaft to the 8.8 you should be good. Might also need an adapter for the brake lines. Also, order the leaf spring u-bolts for the donor axles. If your truck has the 8.8 don't worry about that part. Are the donor trucks the same wheelbase? What about the trans/t-case setup? U-joints and drive shafts are the main concern if you snag a whole axle assembly.

Also, are we discussing front or rear axles here?

A 1990 F250 with an 8.8???
I thought all the F250/350's went to Sterling 10.25" by 1986.

Ford used lots of odd U-joints.
It shouldn't be difficult to make the driveshaft work.

Are you sure you are looking at the correct rearends? I am thinking a f250 of any flavor never came with a 2.47 rearend in it.

If I had a choice between rearends, I would not get the dana 60 that has the drum behind the axle flange. I like the Ford/Sterling where the brake drum is in front of the axle flange, and comes right off without pulling the axles.

Ok the 8.8 is only on the 1981 and/or 1984. I do not know what the one is on the 1990. I am getting the drive shaft and the total rear end including all the hardware such as the ubolts. This is the rear end assembly. My 1985 F250 is not a 4X4. Not to concerned about the drive shaft not being just right as a friend of mine owns a drive shaft shop and if I have to get one built up to match up that is just a fact of life. Glad to hear i don't have to be concerned about the 8.8. Hope I answered all the questions. I am able to buy all the above for 85.00 which I thought was a good deal. That also, includes the brake drums.

Can I Make This Happen

Hello Dave:

I would be putting a F150 rear end under it. All the F250 rear ends I can find are the same ratio as mine (3.55) or lower 4.10. I just can't stand this thing being so low geared. 4th gear is overdrive but it still turns 3000 rpm at 60mph give or take a mile or two. I never go off road so going to the half ton rear end doesn't bother me either. I will make sure I don't get anything with the Dana rear end Dave.

No 8.8's until 1983. FoMoCo offered the 9" thru 1986, so 1983/86 F150's & Bronco's could have either an 8.8 or a 9.

8.8 has an inspection cover, 9 does not.

9" AXLE code 17: 1966/77 = 3.25-1 / 1981/86 = 2.47-1.

1975/96 F150's have 5 lug wheels on a 5.50" bolt circle, 1953/98 F250's have 8 lug wheels on a 6.50" bolt circle.

1980/96 F150's only available with 15" wheels. 1967/98 F250's only available with 16" wheels.

Notice in first two lines of application chart that 1983/89 F250's were available with 8.8's. But, these were "Light Duty" F250's.

99% 10.25"s were 4.10, 3.55 or 3.73's

IIRC 3.08 was available special order.

Code numbers change over the years.
You can't think all "17" axles are the same.
If you want to know what it really is you need the tag or BOM

If they're FoMoCo: 1953/79, standard equipment 1953/54, optional 1955/79...but 1953/72 5 lug 16" (and 15") wheels will not clear front disc brake calipers.

5 lug wheels on a 5.50" bolt circle:

1953/64, some 1965/66's have innie wheels, so called because the hubcap snaps over tabs located on the inside of the wheels center section.

Some 1965/66's, all 1967 and later have outie wheels, so called because the hubcap snaps over tabs located on the outside of the wheels center section.

Paladin says Hop Sing unwise to install F150 rear axle in F250. Frame, wheels, brakes, springs, spring hangers, shackles, shocks, driveshaft and u-joints are all different.

I think I will consider this to be a bad dream, and not move forward on this project. It just to bad they didn't make a higher gear ratio for the F250's back then.
