95 f150 5.0. I bought this truck in feb, in march the check engine light came on and had a hesitation. I took it to a shop where they did some tests. O2 sensor. So I change it out and noticed the tip was black. A month and a half later same problem. Autozone warrantied out the o2 sensor. Now after 6 months and 3 o2 sensors later the manager at autozone won't warranty another one. After asking my problem he suggested I have my cat converter check out. Could this be causing my o2 sensors to go bad too quick? It's the sensor just before the cat converter.
A black tip on the sensor indicates the truck is running RICH. If is keeps fouling the sensor, there is something else wrong with the truck that needs to be addressed first.
It can yes, but the O2 sensor is getting fouled from a rich condition. You need to check the fuel pressure regulator. Turn the key to the on position and do not start the truck. Pull the vacuum line. If fuel squirts out of it replace it.
How many miles are on the truck? It could be a sticking fuel injector. You can buy a whole new old stock (NOS) set on ebay for less than $100.
Only if the sensor was reporting a LEAN condition when it shouldn't have been. It is much more likely that there is another issue at hand. My bet is the truck is running extremely rich, to the point where even with the EEC leaning it out as much as it can, it is still running rich and fouling the sensor. You need to pull the codes from the truck to see exactly what the computer is reporting as an issue.
