I've been dealing with a random misfire, and think I tracked it down. When I changed all the plugs and coils, I noticed that cylinder #4 had a time sert in it. I was able to torque all the plugs at that time, and keep them tight. I was checking coils and boots tonight, and noticed #4 and #5 boots melted to the plugs. After ripping the boots off, I checked the plugs. When I pulled them, they loosened up pretty easy, but threaded out fully. Each plug looked good, including the threads. Upon reinstallation, they would not torque down fully. They won't pull, or blow, out, will only thread back out, but will not tighten up.
Where do I go from here? I put 2 new boots on and ran it back home. Seems just like before checking everything, random misfire but otherwise good.
The chamfered top edge of the insert and diameter. Was a solid insert unlike wire of a helicoil. Asked at Napa what the insert looked like, top was definitely the same style as what was in the head.
I received an email reply from them. They said that the standard time sert should work on #5, and that the night sert should correct #4. Without any knowledge of who did the first one, or how long ago, we can only speculate that it wasn't done properly.
I've had the truck 2.5 years now, bought it with the repair already in place. Since this side head gasket seeps oil, and I plan on fixing that, the plug repair will probably wait until then.
