Transmission Question

I just bought 1979 3/4 4x4 automatic so I can put my 1978 camper special body, engine, and transmission on it. I was wondering if the transmissions were the same on the 4x4 and the camper special (400 in the 4x4 and 460 in the camper special)?

They should both be C6

If the 78 CS is 2wd, there is a big difference between them.

Now if you're referring to the bolt pattern, it's the same.

Yes the camper special is a 2wd...is the transmission a different length?

Different tailshaft housings. The 4wd has a transfer case hanging off the back, the 2wd does not.

I figured the tailshaft would be different but could you switch tailshafts? Both trannys are good but the camper special one is better.

Non-divorced attaches directly to the transmission. A flange on the trans tailshaft housing mates up with the mounting surface on the t.case and the trans tailshaft is splined into the t.case input gear.

Yes you can switch tail-shafts, if you know how to disassemble a transmission completely.

Ohh, I'd forgotten that the '78 and '79 had married transfer cases. The swap is doable but you'll need to do some tear-down, and while it's all apart you'll be looking at it thinking, "Should I rebuild this since I have it all apart anyway?"
