Replacing the Heads and intake manifold, as well as stock cam are all good options.

Long tube headers are also a good choice.

These are where you will see your biggest performance gains.

How many miles are on the motor?

A cam and exhaust are good upgrades on this vintage motor, it's got a factory roller cam so the Comp 35-512-8 would be a healthy step up and Pacesetter brand headers are considered the best fitting. BTW.. if you want an oilpan gasket that will never leak go to Ford and get the one piece steel core MotorCraft gasket.

Anytime I pull an engine I try to replace things like the freeze plugs, rear main seal, oil pump, water pump, timing gears, exhaust manifold gaskets, and camshaft, if needed.

thanks... i was planning on replacing the timing gears, when i do this do you always replace the timing cover and gasket with this. also i was looking into the gasket and seal engine kits, would this be a good thing to do or just buy the individual gaskets i need?

If the engine's coming out, I'd replace ALL the gaskets and seals. If you don't, then they will undoubtedly start leaking, oh... say about a week after you put it back together.

I'd also go with new oil and water pumps, and a new Ford timing cover if your looks corroded (coolant flows thru it). I hear the aftermarket ones don't fit worth a damn.
