hello i have a 1992 f150 with a 5.0. the oil pan started rusting pretty bad and is starting to leak so i want to replace it. when i replace it i think im going to pull the motor. when i pull the motor i want to replace as much as i can. my questtion is if the motor is out what are the things that i wanna replace. also what kind of mods can i do while its out to get some more power? headers? cam? anyone who has expierience and can steer me in the right direction thatd be great. thanks.
A cam and exhaust are good upgrades on this vintage motor, it's got a factory roller cam so the Comp 35-512-8 would be a healthy step up and Pacesetter brand headers are considered the best fitting. BTW.. if you want an oilpan gasket that will never leak go to Ford and get the one piece steel core MotorCraft gasket.
Anytime I pull an engine I try to replace things like the freeze plugs, rear main seal, oil pump, water pump, timing gears, exhaust manifold gaskets, and camshaft, if needed.
Regards
rikard
thanks... i was planning on replacing the timing gears, when i do this do you always replace the timing cover and gasket with this. also i was looking into the gasket and seal engine kits, would this be a good thing to do or just buy the individual gaskets i need?
If the engine's coming out, I'd replace ALL the gaskets and seals. If you don't, then they will undoubtedly start leaking, oh... say about a week after you put it back together.
I'd also go with new oil and water pumps, and a new Ford timing cover if your looks corroded (coolant flows thru it). I hear the aftermarket ones don't fit worth a damn.
ok cool thanks i appreciate it. sorry for all the questions but ive never done this before and i wanna do it right, one last question is, what brand gasket kit would you recommend?
