2001 F350 manual trans 7.3 no start. Has dead (really dead) batteries that don't hold any charge, but when hooked up to other source, will crank easily and not fire. Fuel is being pumped to the upper filter with no issue. Fuses all test good. It seems that there is no injector pulse, though I don't know for sure.
This all happened 2 weeks ago when my wife was pulling a trailer in cold temps and the truck just shut down with no warning. It is not fuel gelling.
Questions:
Could the batteries cause a no start when hooked up to good source (another diesel truck)?
If not, any suggestions are welcome.
If the battery's are that dead then you need to replace them. just jumping with another truck may not work. the pcm needs like a minimum 11.5 volts to work if i remember correctly. your dead battery's may be causing a drain on the system while jumping and not getting enough voltage
The IDM won't fire the injectors with cranking voltage under 9.6 volts. So even though it sounds like it is cranking OK, there is probably not enough voltage. Put new batteries in it and go from there.
Double check the fuse which powers the fuel bowl heater. It also powers the PCM. If the wait to start light comes on then the PCM is getting power. My IDM went out that quick but it ended up being full of water.

I did double check that particular fuse many times. I do see the WTS light each time. Thank you for the suggestion. I will STILL check that fuse.
Unfortunately, the batteries ARE that dead. I am planning to replace both batteries when I get paid (batt cost of $280+). I was hoping to get other suggestions to check as well.
That would be my next guess, provided you have no scan tool.
The truck is two hours away from home, and I forgot my AE
I'm now home trying to get suggestions (other than "Don't forget AE, dummy") for when I go back to try again.
I had a similar situation. Driving to work, noticed dash lights and headlights going dim. Truck shut off. Tried to jump but drew an arc when attaching last jumper cable. Turns out alternator was shorted internally. Replaced alternator and charged batteries. Good to go. Did you notice an arc when attaching jumper cables? Could be your getting enough voltage to spin it over, but not enough to fire IDM. Might want to put a voltmeter on it. I bought a little meter that plus into the cig lighter. Works great also serve as my glow plug led.
