I am wanting to kinda do I slight restoration to my truck... I am thinking a new paint job goin with the original black again.. New chrome mouldings all the way around, new weatherstripping for everything. And possibly new windows and windshield I have put a lot of new in the interior so I will not do that. And I want to rewire the truck while I am at it anybody have a general idea for a price?? Here are a few pictures.
With what you want to do and not knowing anything else about your or what skillz you have.....I'd say easily guess around $5K. Once you get started you'll find more stuff you will want/need to replace so you'll need a cushion of cash for those "in case" instances. If you know people, who'll help or fab or provide services or parts cheap or if you know what you're doing the prices can drop drastically.
If you can scuff it up yourself,as far as you want to take it,then find someone to shoot it with experience, your on your way. With money well saved.Im trading labor by putting new floor in farm house for my ppg paint job.swaping labor for my $ cab paint job.Do as much as you can yourself, there are people here to help in your journey,,,,Dennis Carpenter carries new moldings, yours can probably be pollished up to look new,,,looks like you have a sound truck to work with
Doing the work your self will save you a TON of $$$
If you have an area that you can tape off pretty good and is inside, you could try to paint on your own. Maybe start with a fender or the hood to get a feel for the challenge. Scuff, fix any rust/dents, filler, sand, sand, primer, wet sand, shoot color and then clear if you do BC/CC. If it turns out okay on one body panel, why not do the entire thing?
Like others have said before budget a few grand for the build and hope nothing too serious comes up.
Whatever you do, make sure you have all the money for parts + slush funds. Rule of thumb is take whatever you think it's gonna cost and times it by 3.
It's very easy to get in over your head if you're new to this kind of thing. That's the reason I ended up parting out my 79 instead of finishing the restoration, because I didn't have the time/money/space to do it properly.
paint alone 4 to 5 grand. like hio said just about 2 grand for parts.
4-5 grand for paint??!! Holy hell, hes not wanting to repaint the house too.
My suggestion....Invest in a buffer and some wax, some chrome polish and rags. Get some engine degreaser and dressing. Thats all you need to do to it for now. Thats a beautiful truck just as it sits

Side and tailgate mouldings are anodized aluminum, not chrome. Grille frame is also anodized aluminum.
Thanks for all the input my I like it now the way it is but before I head off to college I just want it to look the best possible in my budget I am only a Sophomore and still have a couple summers to do it so I might just wait and make sure I have enough money to do it right and a lot extra for anything that comes up. And I had planned on doing everything except the paint but I have enough room in my shop I might try the fenders to start and see how they turn out. Thanks everybody

I know exactly the place you're in, 'cause I just went through it myself (I'm a senior)
Your life will get busy in a hurry. Especially junior and senior year. Some people will tell you that senior year is easy and fun. I'll warn you now they're liars. Upper level classes, college apps in the fall (if that's where you plan to go), scholarship apps in late winter/early spring, etc etc. Not to mention, you won't want to have this rig be your one and only driver. At the very least, have a backup car in case something in the truck takes a dump and you still have to get to school/work.
I am/was an active upperclassman. I work 22 hours a week, attend high school, as well as college part time, so I may not be the best example. But just be aware that once the fumes hit ya (car fumes and perfumes), you might start finding yourself behind schedule with whatever you were planning.
Best advice is make sure you are well aware of what you're getting yourself into before you get into it
Thanks I will try to keep that in mind right now I have a 98 ford ranger that I fall back on just in case I won't be taking the 78 to college cause I wouldn't be able to afford to drive the gas guzzler. I just want it to be the best it can be in my budget since it was my grandpas...cause I know once I go to college I won't have the time to work on it or the money.
"Mechanical Reliability" is #1, start, stop, steer. Add go fwd, reverse, ect...trans shift. No leaks, and all the rest is extra.
You can go with a $400 or $4000 paint job. Body work and paint prep really matter.
Before you start thinking about how to pay for paint, better think about that clutch (have you fixed it yet) and when is the last time the front hubs were repacked?
Brakes, rotors, ball joint, u joints, lubed the chassis, fan belt, flushed the coolant system? Xfer case fluid changed, front and rear axle fluid...
All the stuff you mentioned like new chrome ($500 from DC for a just grill shell) can cost you a ton of money. Never hurts to ask a question, but if got get an answer you do not like, remember you asked the question.
If your looking for bright work, grill, trim and etc. I'm stripping the grill and trim off of a 75 Scab and Camper special. The Scab is getting stripped to the body metal and everything else but the motor and box is being sold unless the part is ng. I'll be placing an ad in the thread at the top of this forum, prices will prolly be 1/3 of LMC + shipping. I won't be trying to salvage anything that's scrap, it's not worth the time. I really need to get the yard cleaned up and projects finished.
