"Truck..."

"a Love Story" by Michael Perry. Yep, I guess I've lost it. While at the local library looking for something to read (works better than sleeping pills), I thought I'd peruse the self-help/automotive section to see what they have. The title (not sub-title)of this book caught my eye so I popped it open for a paragraph or so. It seemed quirky enough so I took it home. I just now finished it and if you're an upper mid-west type of person, or if you've redone your truck and you like "quirky," you might like to read this. Anybody else read it or recommend something similar? I'm still not sure if they had it in the right section of the library, but I've wasted my time reading a lot worse.

Spoiler alert....it wasn't about a Ford truck.

I've read a couple of Michael Perry's books - and liked them. They were well written with an earthy, close to the land vibe. TRUCK was an interesting read for me as I found it shortly before I picked up the 49.

If you aren't much for fiction and have run the course of bios and historical work, this may be worth a look.

Yep, I've read it. This was after I got my heap of a '51 but before I began the work on it. The book sort of put things in perspective for me.
Every single nut, bolt and panel on my truck put up a fight like the author described. So I knew what was coming.

Just got one off Amazon for $5 including shipping! Looking forward to it, but... it isn't a romance novel, is it?!

Here all along I thought I had read that book. I also have a book called 'truck'. It was written in the 70's by a guy in Vermont, maybe named Jerome. I read it as a 'kid' and just re-read it two years ago. It was about rebuilding a dodge pilothouse 1/2 ton. Actually was a pretty good tale and he included drawings here and there on how he did stuff. In some ways it was like the volkswagen idiot manual, but with a plot. I will look to see if I can find it. Anyone remember that one? Now I want to read the other one. Thanks.

Excellent!

I have a couple of Henry Gregor Felsen's '50's "hot rod" novels, including "Road Rocket". Once in a while I'll pull one out and read a chapter, very interesting. But there's a fair amount of drama, being about teenagers.

It is a "love story," but the female character in the book plays a rather minor role. It's pretty much the antithesis of a Harlequin Romance. After reading it, I'm not feeling any need to turn in my "man card."

Was "485" written in the same style?

Similar. TRUCK was more relaxed in tone, if that's possible. COOP and VISITING TOM are also worth the read.

I read it several years ago, before I got my truck, and really enjoyed it. Even though I was looking for an F-1 at the time, I actually looked at a couple of International pickups based on his descriptions of the truck. I agree, it's not really a love story about the girl.

I'll have to see if the library has either one of those. Do you live by New Auburn?

I planted onions and broccoli today.

Same state - about 250 miles, and several decades, from me. The area is typical 'Up North' Wisconsin: workin' folk, many with ties to an ag operation of some type, and with the ready charm of the piney woods. Firstrider was originally from the area and needhelp49 remains in the neighborhood.
