What year, and model truck is this, and where are you getting the numbers from?
Starting with the serial/vin, depending on the year, list the entire number stamped into the frame.
Not an engine number, but 87HY would be the starting serial# for a 1948 F3 with a 226 cu in flathead 6.
If that is the truck you have, there was no such thing as an engine serial number
1949 f1
vin 10rc1822 tag on glove box
eng # 87hy61735 tag on frewall
with model number 6hy
8 cyl flathead
4 speed
hope this helps
OK, the 10RC in the glovebox does NOT belong to that truck.
The firewall tag is definitely for a 1948 F3 with the 226 6 cylinder
If it's a 1949 The model would have been a 9HY, not 6.
It looks like you have a real mixed batch there. As I posted earlier, the ONLY true serial # is stamped into the frame, passenger side, near the radiator. The H designates the 6 cylinder, the Y designates an F3
If it IS a 49 F1 with the flathead 8, the serial number should begin with 98RC
Best suggestion I can give you is,
Post the serial number stamped into the frame
Post pictures of the data plate on the firewall as well as one of the ID plate in the glovebox.
Thank you for the valuable info. The truck had a makeover 15 years ago and today still looks like new. Guess I'm still going to buy it, looks good, runs good, just the numbers don't match I guess I can live with that. Thanks for your help.
The question isn't whether it is "numbers matching" (no such thing on '40's - '50's Fords), it's whether you can get a clean title that says the truck is what it is, and may affect future re-sale. What serial number is on the Title?

Aside from the 'future re-sale' issue, if the current seller does not have a title, you may never be able to get one based on the numbers not belonging to the actual truck. If the seller does have a title, you could still have legal problems later. The best advice I can give you is to make sure that the seller does have a title that matches the number stamped into the frame.
I haven't picked up the truck yet so I don't have a title to it yet. Here in Maine after 15 years a title is not needed, how critical is it to actually have a title to a truck that old?
It may not matter as long as you sell it to someone else in Maine. I don't see how that can be, I thought the feds clamped down on that. Too many salvaged cars being "laundered" thru Alabama, which had similar laws until about 5 years ago.
If you can get a title, and the serial numbers on the frame match what the truck appears to be, I would get one.
We don't title vehicles as old as ours here in Alabama either. Sold my 55 to a guy in New York a couple years ago with no problem. It had been in this state since new so the title was long gone.

I believe that Maine is similar to NY state on titles. NY first issued titles in 1972, so any vehicle older than that is covered by a 'Transferable Registration'. In Maine the year is 1995, so if this is a Maine vehicle, it would be covered by the registration which still has to have a serial#/vin matching the number stamped into the frame.
