Oil Pressure

I have a 89 F-150 that blew out a sending unit last week. This morning, the oil filter was leaking and when checked fell apart. Installed a new filter and 5 quarts of oil. Oil does not show up on dip stick nor is there pressure on the gauge. Does anyone have a clue where I should start looking?

Update, just showing low pressure, now. Is there something that would take out both the sending unit and the filter I should be concerned about?

Oil Pressure

Remove oil press. sender and install a mechanical oil press gauge. start engine and presure should be betwen 35 - 55 psi, lower pressures could appear if wear exist, high oil temp AND/OR low viscosity oil (5W30 or less). Don't run engine if it doesn't keep more that 10 psi at least.

Regards;

Oil Pressure

If you don't show any oil on your dipstick you might check to see if:

A) Truck is on level ground (no slopes)

B) You have the correct dipstick for your application

C) You have the correct oil pan for your application

If you are suffering from abnormaly high oil pressure, which might explain the sending unit and filter housing failure, you may have a total lack of oil pressure relief causing an "Overpressurization" of your oil system. Pick up a cheap "direct oil pressure" gauge, I think they used to sell them at wal mart but if not most all auto parts stores carry them, after you have it installed take a look at your pressure, if it's rediculously high (say 80+ psi) you more than likely have a bad spring in your oil pump. The cure to that problem would be a replacement oil pump, not worth messing with the spring in the pump particularly if your truck/engine has a fair amount of miles on it. Hope this will help out, drop me a line with your findings. Good luck !
