leaky transmission

I have a 1987 Ford Ranger with the three speed plus overdrive overdrive transmission. After driving at highway speed for a couple of hours, fluid starts leaking out of the bottom of the counvertor housing. It is a fast drip - almost a steady stream. After leaving the truck stopped with the engine off for 45 minutes to an hour, I put more automatic transmission fluid in and was able to drive on for about 1/2 hour. I checked under the truck and found no sign of a leak. I added a little fluid and continued my trip for another two hours. On a couple of steep hills I saw smoke behind and found that fluid was coming from the transmission and blowing back onto the exhaust pipe. At the end of the 2 hours I had to add several quarts of fluid to get the trans to work. This has happened on three trips, but never on short drived in the city and trips up to an hour. I think there must be a flaw in the front seal. I tried leaving the dip stick out in case pressure was developing but it made no difference.

Any suggestions?? I'd like to know what to look for when I pull it apart.

leaky transmission

This EXACT thing happened to my Chevy truck (go figure) while cruising down the interstate. The problem was the the front transmission seal blew out under the pressure. They can do that when they get too hot sometimes. I think the seal is only a few bucks...but obviously you have to remove the tranny to install it.
