I'd say the ticket problem depends where you live. I had straight pipes on my 460... no cat, muffler, nothing. Not even a full exhaust. Bought it that way, never got pulled over.
Thunderbird with 4.6L V8, straight pipes, no tickets. Been pulled over in it a few times and cops didn't say a word about my exhaust.
Had a 4 banger POS... sounded like crap when the muffler (JUST the muffler) fell off, still had cats on it but sounded like crap. The next day I got pulled over for it.
Basically if it sounds GOOD like you meant your exhaust to be loud, they'll leave you alone.
That said, yes straight pipes will be LOUD and they can and will set off car alarms. When I had my 460 truck, I lived in a double-wide trailer that was up on stilts. Whenever my wife at the time would come back with my truck and pull in under the house, you could feel every cylinder firing thru the floor of the house. I didn't mind, but I also love cruising with the sound of a V8. Under load around 1500 RPM sounds damn good. I grew up around old school tractor engines, I like to HEAR engines run. New cars that are all quiet inside don't play nice with me.
Turbine engines, EMD 2-stroke diesels, Harley's, and old radial aircraft engines are all an ear orgasm for me too, so... I "may" be biased towards engines that sound like engines and not sewing machines.
Dixie460 I totally know what you mean. I don't need a cat so even if I so get pulled over I'm only going to get an excessive noise ticket, rather than some dumb emissions ticket. Hopefully they realize that it's meant to be loud because I made it loud, not cause there's something wrong with it... That being said, I could definitely get pulled over just for it being loud if just all depends on how the cop is feeling. I will try with no cat for a bit (being the 17 year old that I am) and then I will probably throw on a high flow cat at some point or get a 40 series. I appreciate all yours guys info

This statement is the sort of statement that makes me want to raise a glass to a brother. I had straight pipes for the longest time and only got glass-packs put on because they were a Christmas present with my headers but when I ran straight piped people could hear me coming a mile away if I stood on it and I loved the sound it made regardless of the fact I could never hear the radio half the darn time. Some people think its annoying of course but its all in preference. I like hearing my engines and I mean real engines not some little engine that sounds like a wet fart.
Straight pipes with no exhaust restriction actually REDUCE HP/TQ
Something to consider there
Also. LOUNDED is Not BETTER
A proper sized pipe even with no muffler or cat will not reduce HP or Tq at all. Now if he's trying to put a 4 or 5 inch single on that engine then yeah he's gonna lose allot of power in all ranges then. That is a good thing to consider when running straight piped however as soon guys who are all about loud don't take into consideration what size pipes would yield good power while still being loud on there engines. I like loud engines at least when it comes to v8's but I don't believe in compromising performance to try and make it a hair louder.

dual 2.5" pipes WILL reduce HP and Torque on the bottom end on anything short of a full out race engine
I love how everyone mentions how bad loud it will be. If you like loud, you'll love it. I've been around mustangs with no cats and slp loudmouth exhaust which is basically a straight pipe and they sound good. I like loud and I don't see a problem if that's what you like.
Cops won't bother you for exhaust here but they will subs.
