anyone replaced their transfer case? Any gotcha's I need to watch out for?
I developed a slight noise yesterday evening so this morning I started in the back with draining and checking the rear diff then moved up to the transfer. When I drained the the transfer I found small bits of chrome flake probibly from a bearing race or roller and 1 small bit of wire. I am heding up to the wrecking yard as soon as I get the rear diff filled to pick up a new transfer.
Fairly straight forward, just be sure to pull all the connectors and whatnot first. They're heavy ****'s as well. It's been several years since I helped a friend with his, and it was not fun considering he was on 40's and all we had was a floor jack.
Unless you've done them recently, now would be a great time to replace the driveshaft u-joints while it's out or at least check for slop/play.
New case is in the bed of my truck and I am heading home to RR. Seeing the case out eased my mind, it shouldn't take more that 3 hours. The last time I changed a t case Clinton was in office but I'm sure I still have it.
Mission accomplished. About 3 hours labor no busted knuckles and $300 to the wrecking yard for a used t case with 150k miles and a six month warranty. I can again drive without fear of my t case exploding and causing bucko collateral damage.
If you suddenly develop a "soft humm" try draining your t case and straining the fluid. It may save you a lot of heartache.
I didn't tear in to it, the core charge is only $100 but I would rather not throw that away. I am fairly certain it was a bearing failing. It had 413k on it with spotty maintenance. I did not change the oil often or regularly in it. I changed it maybe twice in the last 300k. That is pretty pathetic when you think about how easy it is to change. I am not certain that more frequent oil changes would have helped it any though. Even the oil I drained out of it today looked red and decent with probably 120k on it. I imagine that is why I have never really given any serious attention to maintaining it, the fluid has always come out clean.
