low fuel indicator

From time to time my fuel gauge will drop from its current reading to empty. The low fuel indicator will come on and after a few minutes it will go back. Today I filled up on the way to work and currently it is showing I am empty. Im not sure what system is used to measure fuel. Any ideas? Wire chafing issue?

If you have a Scangauge, program it to show percentage fuel remaining. That will tell you what the computer thinks is in the tank. The gauge is a computer driven read-out of the computer data.

Won't the sg read the same as the computer, therefore telling me empty also.

Last time I had problems like that, it was in an '05 F550 and it was from a fuel tank delam.

It will pretty much tell you if it's a sensor problem or a dash problem. Although odds are it's a sensor or wiring plug type issue.

It 's a fuel level sensor problem. Take a clean white rag and swipe the inside of your fill pipe and report back what you find

Mine was setting a CEL code . The computer is programmed to see the fuel level drop at a slow steady rate. When the slider gets hung up and drops a couple inches the engine light comes on. I believe it's to warn you of a fuel leak or ruptured tank. I also ran about 10 tank fulls with a quart of tranny fluid in each tank. I think if you use a little lube in you tank it will fix it . Mine's been working good for about a year now.
