Well Guys, Today, some 15 years and 135k miles into my LATE '99's journey through life the alternator is not charging well, if at all.
A while back everyone was thinking the best solution was to have a KNOWN ORIGINAL rebuilt-I happened to agree with that.
Now that mine is needing replaced what is the thought?
I HAVE a reputable auto electric shop about 5 miles away and am thinking of having THEM rebuild MINE.
Most of the dime store auto parts chain stores have a NEW unit with a LIFETIME warranty, but I really don't want to change an alternator every year for the rest of my life.
Is there another alternative?
I really want to get another 15 years and 135k out of whatever I put back in!
I have been looking at them for some time as I plan to change mine out here preventively before too long. Some have gone with an ALT from a 6.0 and I have also looked at other more expensive options but they usually have a one or two year warranty. I will most likely just spend the money and get a new OEM one and call it good.
I don't know if Ford even carries new OEM any more. My so keep getting rebuilt ones from them even after telling them up front he wanted new. In California DC power is big and believe there's 2 year warranty and life time parts. That's what I bought for my son, he hasn't put it on yet, but they are nice. They make all kinds, his is a 6.0l so we got the 185 amp alternator. And at idle it puts out what oem puts out at high rpm's.
You can still find them depending upon what amp you want and how much you are willing to pay. There are several that make good ones like DC Power, Nations starter and alternator, Quick Start, and Power bast**** just to name a few. I looked at that same 185 and like that it gives full amps at 1200 rpm.
I have found several OEM alternators on eBay but they are pricey
-Took it in to my local hometown auto electric shop that has been here for many many many years, they will COMPLETELY rebuild MY unit for $145.00 plus tax, and it will be ready by lunch time TODAY!
Can't beat that with a stick! He said that unless I had crazy electrical needs to just leave well enough alone with the stock 110amp.
I AM hoping to get another 15 years/135k out of it!
Pop's dead on. I had mine rebuilt last year by a local shop and asked for new guts that were heavy duty and it has done very well. I also carry a Genuine Auto brand new unit in the back as a back-up so if your man used some solid parts you should be good to go. You have done well pardner if you got 135k out of the original unit. My experience has been these units along with water pumps are good for approx. 100k +/- depending on numerous other factors.
Good trucking.
Yea, I guess I did ok with time and mileage.......I bought my truck 7 years ago from the original owner, who, if anything was more **** than I am about the truck.
They used to tow a small TT which I found paperwork from when the truck was new that Ford changed some wireing so the truck's wireing would charge the TT battery while driving....
We bought a BIG TT 36' last year an have towed that a couple of times all the while charging the 2 group 25 deep cycle batteries.......
Electric brakes on trailers, plus the electric mobility lifts I work with.........
