i have a '88 f150 4x4 4.9L, the problem is that the smog pump is starting to make a lot of noise and i am going to remove/bypass it. does any one know what size fan belt is the correct size in order for me to do this?
one day mine seized up on me. One of the retension springs broke loose after the guides snapped. I just took the smog pump apart and gutted it. Just crunch up the fiberglass veins and pull them out. IT will be a free spinning set of bearings at that point.
Buy a bunch of sizes smaller and see which one fits, then return all the ones too long
For those of us who still have ours working, and this may help f1504x488, I thought there was some mention of a way to lube these pumps, but I don't recall an accurate description of how or what yo look for when doing it.
I bought a pump a couple months ago for ~$49 although for '97 5.8L. You'll avoid emission problems and keep the ole truck running right. I don't like seeing "check Engine" light on and if I was buying a truck I definitely wouldn't want one that the owner couldn't afford to keep up or didn't take the time too. There's nothing wrong with it. I sometimes remove cats from my work trucks. It just gives a clue that the truck might not have been maintained properly. Yours might have. I would still purchase such a truck but at a much lower price. And I'd put the pump back on.
Often times when you go to buy a belt there is an option for with/without smog pump, ask if they have the option for without a smog pump. I have a 4.9 and they always ask me if there is a smog pump or not.
I've never heard of without smog pump, just without AC. I dont think the pulleys are the same, so just try to get one to fit. I did that once whenever i took my AC off and didnt know the right size belt.
well i found a belt that would bypass the smog pump but i had a small problem. an alt. bolt was in the way, causing the belt to rub against the bolt. so what i did was take the smog pump off and totally gutted the insides, greased it up good and put it back together and now it is running quite and i have no problems with engine lights coming on, i think that it runs much better without the smog pump.
