Hey guys. I'm new here. The names dalton. I'm pickin up a 79 f100 2wd with a 302 in it Friday. Just lookin for some helpful notes. What will most likely need replaced. How good are the 5.0 from that era. And most importantly. It has a 90's bed on it. It has to go! So I'm looking for a bed... Looking for the 73-77 grill, faceplate, and headlights... It also has a 3 on the tree which I thought was odd for such a late year. Just lookin for any notes or opinions on this! Thanks. -dalton
Ok some local guys may chime in with where to go for parts.
I'm on the west coast so not much help there.
As far as your other questions, a 302 has always been one of my favorite motors.
I would say to go through all the running gear (brakes, steering, etc.) and rubber first to get it road worthy.
Along with a good tuneup.
Compression check, change all the fluids.
How mechanical are you?
I'd say I'm mechanically inclined. It has mechanical brakes, no power steering, runs and drives decent, it does sound like it's missing off of one cylinder but I'm sure plugs, wires, cap, rotor will fix that issue.
Cool so you're in good shape as far as fixin' it.
You know what you should do, is when you get it post up an introduction and build thread. Be sure to include lotsa pics.
What are your plans for it?
Welcome Dalton to FTE!! Great site with lots of awesome guys willing to help ya out anytime...Now, since you are in the rust belt of the midwest, you will probably have a hard time finding a decent bed but they do exist from time to time--let craigslist be your friend, daily searching for parts you are wanting. Depending you how far you wanna go with your mods/upgrades etc or your intent for your new truck is the key. Make you a list of things that need immediate attention, and like turbo said, making it road worthy with all the safety checks in place should be your starting point/focus first. You can upgrade to PS pretty easy if you want but since its a 2wd thats not real important at this time...? But, since the factory bed has been swapped this would make me believe that there is "some" rust issue present or just around the corner. Check the floor boards, rockers and such to determine if they are solid. I would also check to see if there are any leaks anywhere!! Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!!

Awesome.
I don't know about you but I have a longing for a short bed 2 wheel dent slammed in the weeds with either a turbo'd small block or turbo'd inline 6 that'll cruise at about 80.

Well we looked it over. The frame is still very solid. It has some surface rust but the cab is solid. The good is a bit rusty. The only thing that really grabbed my attention is the floor pans gettin pretty bad.
