Hello
I'm going to be replacing the tensioner pulley on my 95 f-150 5.8 351w as I have come to the conclusion that it's the cause of my squealing. By squirting some wd-40 one at a time starting with my idler pulley turning it on still making noise, then I did the tensioner pulley and no noise. So my question is does anyone have info, pics, video something on how to do it? I do have a Chiltons repair manual but can't find anything about it any help would be helpful thanks. If you need more info to help you with helping please just ask Thanks.
I don`t claim to have any experience with the 5.8 but I have replaced them on 7.3s and 460s and it`s pretty much the same deal. Remove the belt and there is one bolt holding the tensioner assembly to the block. If you look at the replacement part you`ll see what I mean.
BTW: Ihad the same squealing on my 7.3, replaced tensioner and still had squeak. Replaced belt and no more squeaking. So I ended up replacing my belt long before they were worn out, like every 25.000 miles, the belt looked fine if a little shiny on the flat side, but replacing the belt was the only way to get rid of the squealing. So if you have not replaced your belt yet, start there first, and then do the tensioner.
Do I need to take the whole tensioner assembly out or can I just take the pulley off? Is it easier to just take the whole thing off then take the pulley off?
Well I was just going to replace the belt cause it came with a new one in the truck along with the manual which I thought was cool didn't have to bye one :-). But the guy at auto zone said these belts were made not to squeal I thought it hog wash and still do so I tried his suggestion with the lube The pulleys one by one.
I'd just get the whole tensioner assembly if it's original. I put a Gates tensioner and a Gates belt on mine and it's silent. Avoid Dayco belts, they all make noise.
Replace the whole tensioner assembly... I did mine last year. Eventually the whole assembly wears out and looking at it from the side it will be angled. I actually found that the new one was $50 cheaper at the Ford dealership, and was way better quality than the aftermarket one the local parts store had... The original ford one lasted 280,000 Kms, So I figured why not stick with that....
