HD ball mounts
does anyone know of a good 5 or 6 inch drop hitch that might be rated to 7500lbs or more? the one i have now is only rated to 5k, which is fine for everything else, but the car trailer often sees more than that.
I have a 6" drop 10,000lb with a 10,000lb 2" ball.
I had to order it online since all the "off the shelf" places I tried only had 5k and 6k draw bars and ***** and I didn't feel like driving around for hours checking every last place.
I bought one of these about 10 years ago:
Buyers Adjustable Tri-Ball Mount | Tri-Ball| Northern Tool + Equipment
It is rated for 7500lbs on the 2" and 10,000lbs on the 2-5/16".
A couple notes -
1. The rings that are on the opposite end of the clips on the pins break off after a while. I replaced mine with heavy duty cotter pins.
2. The hitch is longer than most. This can be harder to get used to maneuvering in some situations. This also may require you to lengthen the safety chains. I have two 4-5' chains for extensions for just this purpose, and recently built a 7-way round cable extension too (5th wheel extension will work the same - just was cheaper to make one).
3. Having more "moving" parts the hitches can be a bit louder and looser. The BPC version (linked above) has a bolt to lock the adjustable receiver against the drawbar. The main drawbar of the hitch is still free to move in the vehicle receiver and the ball mount drawbar is free to move in the adjustable receiver, but locking the bolt down helps keep the movement to a bare minimum.
I would also look at the B&W hitches. They have some nice ones.
I would suggest at least a dual 2" and 2-5/16". Everything I've ever pulled was one of the two - even log splitters. Although, you never know what you may need a 1-7/8" for.
Again, having the height adjustment is GREAT. Having a level pulling rig is the right way to do it. It irks me every time I see someone pulling a trailer with the tongue hanging on the ground or the rear of the trailer scraping the road. A loaded trailer should pull straight and level! With a fixed hitch you have nothing to adjust to get it right.

i did some more measuring and i actually needed a 4" drop for the car trailer, and a 6" drop for the pop-up and the boat.
BUT.... Northern tool had the best deal on HD ball mounts. they 17,000 lbs rated draw bars in 2, 4, and 6" drops for $38. these all require a 1.25" shank ball.
they also had a 10,000 2-5/16" ball with a 1.25" shank for $13.
and i got my 6" drop 5,000 pound ball mount for $23 and a 5,000 2" ball with 1" shank for $9.
still quite a bit of money, but best deal in town. i just couldn't bring myself to do the adjustable ball mount, they all seemed so big and clunky ... just wasn't something i wanted to fumble around with everytime i hooked to something different. easier to just change the ball mount, i think.
TSC has the HD ball mounts as well, but they were asking $55 for them. they did have a 26,000 lbs ball for $30, but that was way more than i needed, so i decided to save the money instead.
thanks for all the suggestions!
