Stand-alone EEC?

I am looking at the 5.8L Fuel Injected F-series. Picking up a used 5.8 and trans this way seems pretty affordable an I can test drive it, compression test it, etc. I know the late 80's (88?) is when the 5.8 went fuel injected in the F-series. That would be a pretty easy swap since the EEC is separate. Question is, when did the EEC change away from a stand alone? Need to know what my options are. Thanks.

What exactly are you trying to do? The EFI system in these trucks is pretty much "stand alone" all the way through but the computer controlled transmission was introduced pretty early behind the 5.8 which adds to the wiring harness. In '92 the trucks were switched to electrical speedos and vehicle speed was fed through a PSOM module in the speedo cluster before going to the PCM so that's when things got even more complicated.

That is EXACTLY the type of info I was looking for! I want the simplest EEC to run the engine. I would prefer not to start getting into the Powertrain modules with the electronic gauge inputs and computerized transmissions. So, '88-'91 Should be the "simplest"? I'm looking to swap it into a '63 F-100, so there isn't much existing to build on electrically and I want to keep it relatively simple.
