So I am really digging into the truck here lately. Wanna get it in top shape. I am replacing the AFE cold air intake with the stock filter. While disassembling, I noticed that the fitting that goes into the valve cover from the air intake hose was broken:
Question #1: should there be an o-ring on this end?
Question #2: should I replace the whole thing?
Question #3: where did the broken part go????????????????????
Question #4: where should I buy?
Basically its rerouting the crank case vents either to a filter or to the atmosphere. Eliminating the vents going to the turbo and intake. Stops the oil residue from entering the top of the engine. I believe there is a write up in the tech folders.
I highly recommend just doing the CCV reroute while you're there. There is a write-up somewhere here for using a basic autozone $5 breather filter and about 10 foot of 1" heater hose and re-routing it to the back of the truck near the rear fender. I did this and it took all of a half-hour. I was VERY motivated to do this after seeing the inside of my intake when I removed it to replace my oil cooler. Between CCV oil vapors and EGR gasses it was an absolute mess! I have now deleted both and expect clean intake air from here on out.
You can check other diesel performance sites as well, as there are a few "super-duper" remote CCV filter kits out there that basically keep the ccv gasses entering the intake to satisfy the tree huggers, but filters out the oily residue.
