Colorado "Beetle" Pine bed

Hi Guys,

I just finished my new wood bed today. It took a while as I did things a little bit different than stock...

I used Beetle pine for the wood. The pine trees here in colorado tragically had an infestation of beetles and the result is the wood looks a lot more colorful and unique than typical pine. Personally, I love the coloration. Three coats of spar varnish added a really nice depth to the wood too. The strips and inside bed were painted with duplicolor bed liner (the blue can, because it's finer and works better...) and the bolts are all stainless.

See what you think!

Thanks,
Danny

Beautiful colors but where are the beetle holes? I built some beetle pine side board for my trailer several years back and the boards are full of holes. ?????

Nice job! We also call it blue pine around here.......MT also has thousands of square miles of beetle infested forests. Which is also why, like CO, we have huge forest fires every summer....

Here in MN. we call that paint grade pine. Not sure why someone would want to cover up that nice coloration. That looks good with the spar varnish on. Good job.

Cool, great looking bed. We have the beetle up here too so wood is plentiful.

I heard that lumber companies in Colorado weren't allowed to harvest the dead trees....that the environmental rules required that the trees be allowed to fall and rot. It looks good in your truck!!

That looks really good. The coloring and knots sure do give the wood a lot of character and the dark strips even set it off even more. Great job.

Thanks so much, everyone! I really appreciate the kind words. It sure was a fun project.

Beautiful colors but where are the beetle holes? I built some beetle pine side board for my trailer several years back and the boards are full of holes. ?????
I'm not sure, Ray. I saw a few boards at the lumber yard that had them but I didn't pick those. I took my time and picked very specific boards. I think the beetle kill pine here is different than beetle kill in other parts of of the country. I know my dad was a career woodworker in NC and I lived in TN for the last 10 years and I never saw anything like this blue spruce.

I heard that lumber companies in Colorado weren't allowed to harvest the dead trees....that the environmental rules required that the trees be allowed to fall and rot. It looks good in your truck!!
Thanks, Dan! I think you're right - they have to wait until the trees falls down. From what I've heard, the bluer the board - the longer it's been on the ground.

Thanks,
Danny

I've done more than my share of woodworking and pine was relegated to my earlier years when I couldn't afford anything else. Since then I've gone out of my way to avoid pine at all costs; however, I really like the looks of your bed! Maybe I need to adjust to Beetle Pine?
