2 questions about separate suspension/drivetrain issues, PLEASE HELP!!!
#1, u-joints: I have the two piece drive shaft and already had to replace the center joint. It seems that I did not torque the drive shaft bolts enough, so they worked themselves out and long story short, the major vibrations and play toasted the rear too. I've since invested in three brand new, lifetime guaranteed Moog joints and am going to replace all three at once just as preventative maintenance. My question is, how does the front shaft come out? Do I have to take the center support out?
#2, front suspension: A few weeks ago, I veered the wrong way at a fork in the road, doing about 70, and the way I went had a very sharp curve and a stop sign that I did not see. I took the curve at the full 70 and had to slam on the brakes locking up the fronts (to avoid running straight into a busy highway), and since then it has a "thumping" that you can feel, that varies based on speed. It seems that when braking the steering wheel will go back and forth slightly. What have I messed up here? I'm at a loss.
Thank you all for any insight.
Here's the problem I have with flat spots in the tires, I have locked up the fronts on this truck before and experienced it, but it would go away after another few hundred miles. This has been going on for about the past 800-1,000, and progressively getting worse. As I said, it will pull the wheel back and forth slightly when braking. I was hoping it would go away, but no luck. When I skidded through that turn, the body roll put most of the weight on the PS front, which seems to be where it's coming from. Think I could have put too much strain on the wheel bearing? It's always made a little noise since I bought it, but I never could feel it until now.
...but before doing that, raise the front end and check for warpage in the rotor by spinning the wheel by hand, if it drags in the same spot all the time then that rotor is warped, or even cracked ... remove wheel to inspect.
...but before doing that, check wheel bearing by spinning the wheel and listening for grinding, crunching noises and also grab the wheel at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock and try to pull/push it in and out on the axle.
