Okay to make a long story short, I picked a 66 ford f-100 for pretty much nothing. and got to cleaning it up and changed the oil today and found metal in the oil, soo what do I do now ? Its a 390 ford, about 192,000 miles.
I want to keep the 390 in it, just dont know what I can do to this thing ? I know it will need bore/hone, rings bearings etc. etc. etc. I moreless want to know if i can do maybe a stroker to it ? alum heads? intakes etc.? And if it would cost me more or same would i be better off to finish my 460? One thing I have to have tho is the old style clutch rod that goes into the side of the block. do 460s have these on the blocks? since i havent gottin my 460 block yet.
Hey Stroked:
You can build up the 390 just as much as the 460. There are some stoker kits that are available for these but I do not know how redily available they are. Sorry I cannot answer your bellhousing/shift linkage question, don't know much about the 460s. Either way, of course, it's all about the cash....

I think im going to stick with the 390 for now, as i dont have the coin to drop on a set of 3k heads for the 460. anyways I have another 390 that came with my truck so if you know anyone looking for one let me know! i'll sell it for hell i dunno 50 bucks? its been bored .030 over, and as far as i know it has a lifter problem/noise so i have no clue. Just want to be up front and honest with what i know/been told is wrong with it.

That darn money thing keeps getting in the way of all the fun! The cost to build these babies is usually the same across the board, doesn't matter too much which engine you start with. Althought I do not know if anyone in need of a 390 right now, maybe some of the 360 guys would like the internals... All I am really in search of is a 4 brl carb for an automatic to place on top of my current engine build (build is key word here, not ready yet), rather than spending the bucks on new for now.

Id keep the 390... Im really pleased with my 390.
Mike G... if your looking for a carb, I have a fresh rebuilt 650 Holley we could talk about.... I rebuilt it, slapped it on the 390, used it just to fire it up to see if it'd run, and let it run for 15 seconds or so, shut it off. Its sitting on the shelf not even being used.
One thing you can do to a 390 is make it into a 410. I don't remember the details, but it sounded like a fairly easy process and I guess it just makes monster torque/HP. I only wish I knew about it before I built up my 390.
a 410 is just a 428 crank in the 390.
I knew about it before I built mine, but I didnt have the money for the kit from SCAT.
My 390 is .30 over so it makes it a 396.... I could prob bore it to a 410... but I won't try that just yet.
Good luck w/ your project tho.
I believe a bored 390 becomes a 406 and a stroked 390 becomes a 410. FORD built both types in early 62 maybe 63. The 406 likes to rev and the 410 is a stump puller. Another possibility is boring to 4.13 and using a 3.98 stroke 410/428 crank-result is a 428. A 3.78 stroke(390) and a 4.13 bore is the 406. Both versions use the 390 con rods.
Can any of you guys tell me if the body parts off of a 2 1/2 ton 64 are the same as a 3/4 ton? I found a 64 2 1/2 ton today that is straight as a pin. even has the head liner in it in great shape. Chrome grill with NO dents. Also will the core support work in a pick-up?Everything looks the same to me but thought i'd ask before i try and buy it .. Thanks John
I did not mean to imply that your 390+.030 was a 406 Andysutt, only that it is possible to overbore SOME 390's to 4.13 and use all your 390 pieces-except the pistons of course.
The only prob is the pistons, altho I heard that some rebuilders still sell 406 pistons. i.e. Badger, Silvolite?, Federal Mogul, etc.
I was very close to doing that for my '66, but found a 428 from a Mustang with all the hard parts. Several thou later it's in my truck!!
There's no replacement for displacement when towing!!!!!
