Rear Diff Help

I was going to put a Detroit turetrac in the 10.5 rear end. my camera is not here right know so i will post pics later. the diff dose not make any noise. when i pulled the Carrier it has marks on it like the pinion gear is rubbing it. i can mover the pinion gear around 1/64" in any direction, i think my pinion bearings are going out. i have never done a diff before but i have head and am good at wrench turning. the gears have no chips are marks on them so there good to use again, i just cant see how the pinion moves that much and not making noise? the bearing kit for the pinion is $200 that is more than i paid for the turetrac. im i over looking something or is it need a rebuild?

Is it possible that somebody did a shade tree pinion seal replacement and the pinion nut has backed off?

what is the best way to check?
there is no metal in the oil no brunt smell just a perfect pattern where the gear rubbed.
do i need to pull the pinion and check the bearings or just snug it to spec. i have had the truck for 45k miles so i dont know what it might have ruined?

No, that's the problem, people re-use the pinion nut and they are a one use part, that's why they back off.

If it was mine I'd pull the pinion to see what's going on if you're comfortable doing that, and at the very least you'll need a new pinion nut and crush sleeve.

i can pull the pinion and check.
have you seen the crush sleeve eliminator?
here is a clip
I am positive the Ford 9in crush sleeve eliminator works with a 10.25 and 10.5 axles. I put one in my old bronco when I swapped in a 10.25 with a Detroit and 5:13's.

"The pros far out weigh the cons in my opinion. You can swap yokes with no worries but the biggest one is you don't have to worry about the crush sleeve "crushing more" over thousands of miles and torque and then as a result destroying your pinion bearings. The only con is setup time. to properly do the solid spacer you have to assemble it all and check everything then tear it apart and do it again if the preload isn't right. I made myself setup bearings so its easier but still kinda a pain."

what do you think is it worth the trouble of setting it up?

also it looks like i need new ring gear bolts as i have seen where you are not to reuse them? is this right as the ford shop manual dose not say to get new ones?

On my truck at about 140 000 miles I had the shims behind the bearing and pinion brake up and come out. That looses any pre load and my truck sounded like a u joint was starting to fail. My pinion bearing was a slip fit so the tooth contact was wrong with out this .020 shim.. I bought the truck new and it had never been touched. I built a new .020 shim and used cat retaining compound on the bearing and shim and reassembled. A new crush sleve and nut and went back together. About 50 000 miles ago. Not by the book but not 1900$ repair either. More like 15$

the marks are light not deep and the gears look good, the wear on the spider gear is to far in where the pinion is floating

EEK. The solid pinion spacer is an OK idea. I don't have on on my truck, but many wheelers run them for ease of maintenance. The problem with the pinion nut isn't backing off, its that people either under or over tighten it when replacing the seal.

Depending on how long it has been like that, I would plan on the gears making a little noise after the are set up properly again.

i got the truck from the original owner and he has never had the diff touched.
so this has happened over 192k miles from the factory set up.
it dose not make noise now but so i hope it dose not when fixed, as the gears look good.
im going to set it back up and see what happens.

Have you gotten it apart yet? I would expect to see a broken shim or worn bearings.
