It never did. Door jamb tag indicates when the vehicle was BUILT. That's NOT the same as MODEL year; model year changeovers almost always happen before the calendar year, usu. between July and September. Sometimes LONG before. For example, they were building 2001 MODEL year Saturn coupes as early as March 2000, but they didn't change the sedans to the 2001 model year 'til about August 2000. Model year changeover can even vary by assembly plant, so a vehicle built in, say, Sept 1995, might be a 1995 model in one plant, but a 1996 in another.
F-250 (HD/SD) / F-350 is another great example. Through most of the OBS generation, the model year changeover was the usual August/September. But the '97 MODEL was built right up through mid-December 1997. There are even some claims of '97 models, OBS, built in Jan and Feb of 1998. They started building early '99 SuperDuty trucks very early in '98, but they all carried the '99 model year code in the VIN.
