NP435 Broken Split Lock Ring-no 2nd gear??

NP435 Broken Split Lock Ring-no 2nd gear??
74 F100 4x4 w/np435.
Trans would grind but 2nd gear wouldn't engage.Popped top cover.Found that the 2 piece "split lock ring" between 2nd and 3rd broke.So when 1st tried engaging 2nd,it pushed too far forward.
Did a little research and found part B7t-7109a available through many nos suppliers.Looks like the right part.
Has anyone successfully replaced this with trans in truck?Looks like a PITA,but double.

So the big question...anyone successfully installed this without pulling trans?Being a 2 piece,I think it can be done.
