So i accidently threw my truck into reverse before i pushed the clutch in and it made a loud clunk, shot the shifter outta my hand and stalled the engine. Now the engine idles low and sometimes will idle fine on rare occasion. Idk where to even start looking. Its an np435 4 speed.
Let's see what damage you've done to the trans first.
She probably made a horrendous grinding noise before that loud clunk....Anyway, while the motor is running, can you shift (using the clutch) into first and have her roll? How about reverse?
I checked my vacuum lines and all my wires. Everythings is good. My plug wires are a loose on the plugs but still connect. I have an edelbrock 1406 carb. I did notice the secondary butterflies arent working. Im gonna test my fuel pressure and see why the secondary isnt working.
Ok, havent found any vacuum leaks yet. But when i drive it around it runs fine in gear. But when i push the clutch in or have it in neutral it idles low and rough. But if im coasting and hit my brakes the rpms come back up to normal.
man i hope not. i drove it around a bit today and when i start out in second gear it is somewhat smooth. but when i shift to 3rd at a low speed and its at low rpm's it shudders bad when i try to accelerate. and the same in 4th. but at high rpm's there is no shudder. and it sounds to me like it is not firing on all cylinders. i cant really tell cuz my transfer case whines too loud when driving. i replaced all the spark plugs and wires. except for the coil pack wire that goes to the center of the dist. cap. the distributer looks like its bent to the passenger side ever so slightly, not straight up and down. and i replaced the inline fuel filter that the previous owner had on it. its gettin god fuel and there are no vacuum leaks from what i can see. ive been thinkin its either the clutch, the throwout bearing or maybe even the pilot bearing.
So i pulled my valve covers off just for the hell of it and found my problem. My #1 exhaust valve spring is snapped. Does anyone know how to swap it without pullin the head off?
I have a fitting that screws into the spark plug hole to allow it to be hooked to my air compressor to hold valves closed while retainers are removed. Done it many times to replace valve seals.
I wonder if it would be a good idea to have the piston on the cylinder you're working on at top dead center?
Don't know for sure, but I'm guessing with the piston all the way up the valve might be prevented from falling completely inside if something goes wrong?
Wait! Come to think of it, you'd have to in order for both valves to be closed and for the cylinder to hold pressure...carry on.
