1966 f100 straight 6 240 Trucks been vibrating bad for a while and I thought it was a mount problem but I replaced both motor mounts and transmission mount but now it's vibrating worse and slow while driving now. So I figured I had a dead cylinder so I checked all the plug wires and only spark plugs. Only 1 and 6 make any difference in the way it runs when I pull them off the distributor so I thought it was just the spark plugs or wires that needed replaced but the wires are still sparking so I I switched the first spark plug with the second to see if it was the spark plug that was bad and it wasn't. #1 still worked and #2 still didn't so it's not the spark plugs(I will be replacing them anyway though). Anyone have any idea on what could be causing me to run on only 2 cylinders?
Quick cheap and easy test for a vacuum leak. Engine warm and idling, spray WD-40 around the intake gasket to head area. If the idle changes you have a vacuum leak. A vacuum leak will affect the air fuel ratio and cause a lean misfire. Then like everyone else said do a compression test. Warm engine. Remove all spark plugs. Block accelerator all the way open. Disconnect the coil wire. Using a remote starter turn the engine over 5 times per cylinder. Record your findings. Any cylinders reading abnormally low (more than 20 psi) get a spoon full of oil and then repeat the test. If compression comes up significantly its rings, little change its valves. IMHO.
Agree with above compression test, also at no cost look at dizzy cap for cracks and burns have had plug wires come lose in the cap and burn the cap ck rotor for burns carbon deposits look at cam lobes in dizzy are all the same opening the points?
points are working because you have some fire what do your plugs look like? Are they oily wet? If they are dry could be vac leak
How many miles on engine?
Got a shop manual? You will need one or a fat wallet
Don't have a compression tester at the moment and I'm stuck in the ice. I will get one as soon as I'm able to drive to the store. The spark plugs are wet with oil and 105xxx miles on it and no shop manual.
is this a 223ci engine? I see 240
does the engine have a lot of crankcase pressure-blow bye ck at pcv for smoke and pressure or oil filler cap
any milk in the oil at filler cap?
ice? my family is posting pic of the trees breaking ice and snow in NC and SC
brother in law slipped on ice and fell down the stairs broken finger! stay home
