Cool Manual transmission problems

I have a. 1996 ford f150 xl 4.9 5 speed manual transmission. And now when giving it gas it 4th or 5th. It feels like it's slipping. The revs going higher but I don't speed up. Some times I got a slight burning smell. It shifts fine in all gears. I have to let the clutch almost all the way out to engage a gear. HopinG it's not the transmission

Your hope came true it's not the transmission, it's the clutch. Do you have a 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive?

It's just that a 4 wheel drive is a lot more work to remove and re install the transmission.

Well I've done my research. Buying a clutch set up with the internal slave cylinder and might go ahead and replace a few seals while I'm at it. I've received one quote of 1100 from ammco. More then likely just going to do it my self with a few friends. Still in the fence though. Any recommendations as far as clutch goes. So far zoom and even center force sound pretty good for the money.

I would just go with the stock style clutch setup myself. You may be able to get a very good deal on the whole package from Ford, believe it or not. The whole package being the clutch disc, pressure plate, pilot bearing, slave cylinder and throwout bearing and I believe they even include a plastic alignment tool in the package.

Whatever you do don't use a parts store slave cylinder. We read of too many of them failing in a very short time. Get a genuine Ford slave cylinder.

STAY AWAY FROM AAMCO! They are about as good as letting Wal-Mart work on your vehicle...

That clutch looks pretty nice. LUK is a good brand.

That clutch is "for over 8500GVW 11".
You have an F150, I don't see it having a Gross Vehicle Weight rating over #8,500.

Are you sure your flywheel is drilled for the larger clutch plate?
It would suck to have it all apart and find out that it doesn't fit.

Oops, I didn't see the GVW specs. Looks like this would be the correct clutch for that application:

I'm not saying it won't fit, just that it would be good to know before it's gutted in the driveway.

I replaced my T-19 with a ZF5-s42 only to discover that the pressure plate would not bolt to my flywheel.

I don't know anything about the flywheel on a 1996 4.9.

Isn't that still the 11 inch clutch?

Different transmissions. An F-250 and larger is going to have a ZF5 trans and your F-150 has the M5OD-R2.

So I can upgrade to an 11 inch clutch but as long as it's not the 8500gvwr. This one should work then. Anyone done the 11 inch upgrade.
