Hydro Lock, cause, effect, consequences?

think it might have. been having oil cooler failure issues, not driving it but warming up during freezing temps. This AM it ran for five minutes, sputtered and died! puked out of the de-gas bottle. Gray, oily and smells of antifreeze..

Input please...

Sure sounds like an oil cooler. Oil coolers are the main cause of egr cooler failures. Doesn't mean yours, egr, has failed but! Failed egr coolers are usually the cause of hydrolocking. Water leaks into the cylinders and locks up the engine. Water doesn't compress.

Did it puke combustion air or did it pump all of the oil into the cooling system? Are you sure it was a hydrolock and not running the HPO system out of oil. How much antifreeze/oil did it puke?

Stuff coming out of your degas bottle should smell like anti-freeze because that's all that is suppossed to be in there.
Grey and oily is not a good thing. It could be oil cooler, it could be a blown head gasket. If the engine is hydrolocked and won't turn over, it could be a blown EGR cooler or a bad injector which caused the problem to begin with. Both of which can cause blown head gaskets.
If it is hydrolocked, pull your glow plugs and crank the engine to see what comes out of which cylinders. Depending if you get fuel or coolant, you'll know where to start.

No oil on the stick wasn't mentioned on the original post. Probably an oil cooler problem.

thanks Ashville. did the flush during the summer months and it got progressively worse, didn't drive but oil cooler seems to be the culprit
sand, grit and the like. oem oil cooler will be about how much? will
do the ficm repair at the same time.

thanks for the help again...

IIRC you can get the cooler kit for ~$290 that comes with all the necessary gaskets.

AND don't try to save a $1 or two and buy Dorman.
You will regret it. The green gaskets falls apart and
then goes on to plug up the reservoir screen and
then blow that out. Then goes on it way to the HPOP
and the IPR and kills the IPR. If you lucky that is all
the farther it goes and not out to the injectors and plugs
them up too.

Save a $1 with Dorman and spend a few $K down the road.

Use the search tool and with these words "Dorman, Nail, Coffin"
You will find this link and a few others.
