Been suffering some take off shudder as well as the 55mph shudder and finally took the truck into the dealer who informed me it is throwing a couple of misfire codes (no CEL). Quoted over $400 for spark plugs, not that I would pay somebody to do them anyhow.
Looking around the boards, seems a lot of people are seeing premature wear on the ecoboost plugs and have had success regapping or replacing. Any words from 5.0L owners? What are the odds they just need regapped? I'll probably just replace them anyway, but its a good discussion. Also are they are simple to replace as it looks- just pop the coil packs off and they are there in the valve covers?
IMHO...here's the deal....
While the PR materials all state the plugs are good for 100k miles and the ignition systems are producing up to 100k volts, reality is the systems are generating about 27,000 volts within the delivery source, while this is a very strong system, it is just not going to keep plugs going for 100K miles. When you look/consider thermal expansion, etc of the threads, at 30K, I would be pulling them....as the ceramics can tend to begin breaking down, etc.
Also, RA has the Autolite XP5363 for $5.14/ea plus a $2.50 rebate (mail in). I hear a lot of "go with OE motorcraft" but has anybody seen good results with the autolites?
A little over $400 for parts and labor plus apparently a misfire diagnosis is not a warranty claim either. Might like Ford products but G.D. does their customer support suck.

How is a misfire issue not a warranty claim? I had a coil replaced on warranty just a couple months ago.
If your within 3yr/36k I would think it would be covered.
.
A common cause of the misfires is the fact that the plugs are incorrectly gapped from the assembly line.
One would think that a factory defect such as that would be known and the company motivated to make it right by their customers. This is the third time the truck has been into the dealer for this issue. The first time they reflashed the trans for some reason, the second time they blew me off andf said it was my "chopped up truck tires" which was total bull and the only reason they found it this time is because I specifically requested them run the mode 06. I've spoke with multiple dealers as well as the customer support line at Ford and they all agree that spark plugs are a wear/maintenance item and not a warranty coverage. The one deal did express concerns as to why a misfire isn't a warranty issue, and though I expect my dealer to charge me for the diagnostics and whatnot it will not be without a fight.
It would be tough to make a misfiring engine pass an emissions test...seems like warranty to me.
Assuming the plugs are the cause, they are a replacement item on a maintenance schedule, similar to oil. Pretty sure that is how it's not covered by any warranty.
