Hey guys so power steering went the other day in my 94 f-150 but i cant figure out why? it is not leaking and still holding fluid. The Fluid is still pumping through the lines cant figure it out?
Yeah I had that happen too on my old F-250. Unfortunately I never fixed it before I got rid of the truck, so I don't know what caused it. Just dumped all hydraulic pressure one day after I hit a rut, and never worked again.
Best thing I can suggest would be to tee into the discharge side of the hydraulic pump and see what the pressure is. You'll probably be fine with a 3000 PSI gauge from a hydraulic supply place... I don't think the pressure is much over 1500 PSI or something at full load (wheels turned to the stops).
I had a similar problem, turns out the steering gear box failed and the fluid was just running in a constant circuit rather then providing force to turn the wheels.
I don't know a test procedure for it, I took the old fashioned route and threw money at the problem, new pump, new lines, and finally a new box.
the hardest part was getting the rusted together steering column slip joint to move back enough to get the new box in place, and then getting the lines good and tight with the fender-well still in.
I would suggest taking the fender-well out or loosening it to move it a few inches up for clearance.
The steering box controls how pressure is applied to the movement of the steering wheel, Replacing a steering box is rather simple, but if you go that route try to get a high quality replacement so you arnt doing this again in a month or two.
