Hello All
I got a 1979 F-250 4x4 that was parked for about 2 monthes, Started it today and the power steering does work at all. I used too with out a problem unless it was low on fluid.
But problem is now it doesnt..
It is full of fluid
all lines are not pluged
fluid runs out when you take the pressure line off the pump
it is pumping some fliud but it doesnt act like it has any pressure behind it.
I was thinking the must be a relief valve that stuck but i dont know where its at.
Do any of you guys have a good idea to fix it.
Thanks
Shawn
First off be careful about cracking open hydraulic lines, there's enough pressure in there to hurt you real bad!
A pressure relief valve is nothing more than a spring on a poppet of some sort, when fluid pressure over comes spring pressure it dumps the over load.
This could be your pump or steering box, usually the bad part leaks or makes noise.
Do you have any of that?
It was 50 degrees outside yesterday and then i parked the truck in a heated shop all day today.
Yes i do under stand Hyds, lots of pressure.
the only leaks are seeps in the rubber return hoses and where the can mounts over the pump, very slow leaks like need a little bit of fluid every couple monthes when your using the truck
Well I'm not sure what to say pumps don't just stop making pressure unless from sitting so long the veins froze up some how and broke when it was started.
Best I can say is replace the pump and see what happens.
Not sure here.
first have you jacked up the truck to see if the steering is loose, axle u-joints not frozen, ball joints and tie rods free? If so just for fun crack loose the hp line at the steering gear(now this should get messy) turn the steering wheel now see if fluid sprayed all over (it should have) if no mess tighten the hose turn steering all the way one direction you should hear and feel the relief valve coming off the seat.
