I run 15w40 traveller all fleet in everything. Down to 0 deg F.including 01 expy 5.4 . It has a ccv @ -20 of 5500. A 5w20 oil is allowed a ccv up too 6500. They tend to be around 5200 or so @ -20.(non syn) anyone else running 15w40 and loving it?
I only run 5w-30 dino in our 2000 Expy, 5.4. I think '01 and on up requires 5w-20. Personally I wouldn't run 15w-40 in temps below 20 F. These engines have such tight clearance, thicker oil only puts more strain on starter, battery, bearings, lash adjusters, oil pump, timing chain, timing chain tensioners...the list goes on...

If I had a block heater, maybe....
Some late 01s have vct mine doesnt. I was skeptical when i first put it in too. But when i started it in 2 degree f and had oil pressure before i released the key it doesnt worry me. If i had vct id use 5w30 though. Cant go wrong with either.
Um no. Why on Earth would anyone in their right mind do something so ridiculous as to run 15W-40 in an engine designed to run on 5W-20?
Well the expedition is creeping up on 200,000 on 15w40 . All of my other farm vehicles have never failed from an engine oil related failure. Had one truck drive away after i sold it with 316,000. Didnt burn an ounce either. I have had really good luck with 15w40. Its nice filling up from one bucket. Not dissing 5w20 just prefer 15w40 since its never let me down. I have the miles and numbers on cold crank viscosity proving it is not harming my motors.like i said its just a preference just like 5-20 is.
Well I personally have run Rotella 15w-40 in several of my vehicles without any issues. My Dad was in citrus management for over 30years and 15w-40 is what they always ran in their tractors and grove trucks.
With the 15w-40 being tested daily in my Dad's career, we found it easy to take a strong liking to it. We and the company my Dad worked for never saw any complications from running good ole Rotella....if a tractor broke down, it was form other reason vs being a oil related issue in my opinion.
Some people would say oil is oil and others say the manufactures recommendation must be strictly adhered to, but to each our own. I am from south Florida and never dealt with super cold temps, but I think 15w-40 is a good oil for my specific applications.
I have ran Rotella in everything from my wife's 12 Scion xB to my older 93 Stealth RT TT and even in my 94 MKIV Supra ( big single turbo).....never had an issue...in fact the cars performed better in my opinion.
Like I was saying...to each their own...original poster asked about 15w-40 and I have supplied my two pennies above.
