Does your van have front brake splash shields?

I have a 1995 Quigley 4x4 van and the splash shields on the back of the front brakes are rusting away. Since it's a Quigley it has an F350 front axle and associated parts. I just looked these up, which I think are a dealer part only, and they are $60 a piece. I'm wondering if I even need to replace them or just remove them. I don't think I've seen them on any other vans I've had. I can't decide if I really even need them or not. I'm in Tn. and we have pretty mild winters so I don't see the little road salt used here destroying my brakes like the original ones on this van since it lived in NY.

Please tell me your year and model of van and whether you even have them, or can you just see the backs of the discs.

Thanks!

My '97, 00 & current '03 E250's did not have those either Scotty.

Those are more than likely particular to the F-Series and I'd bet they're available gently used or aftermarket through eBay, Amazon, RockAuto etc etc.

I can't see them being a bad idea, perhaps replacements would be plastic? If not I'd replace them with a set coated with something like POR-15 to at least slow the rust deterioration down a bit.

I'm not sure blocking the winter weather and/or road salt is their only benefit but as you also mention most vans never received them so perhaps they're not really necessary?

Hmmm, OK thanks to you both. It's weird that this van has them and others don't. I didn't think I remembered ever noticing them on my previous vans. They must be standard on F350 trucks though, because that's what front axle I have. Weird that the vans wouldn't have them.
JWA, that's a good idea but they are very thin metal and mine are too bad off to do anything with. They are literally just hanging by a thread. As soon as I feel like pulling the rotors I will just remove them. I'll keep a lookout for some but haven't found any yet.

Thanks again!

Ford parts search

I was asked to find replacement ones. I didn't find anything until I checked the Ford site 2K004 & 2K005

I have a '94 and '92 E350 cut-away's, both had them, the '94's fell off years ago from still living in the NY rust belt.

I'm thinking, at a time, Ford engineers came up with the idea that they could save $1.380 per vehicle and eliminated them, now with what's still in storage, for 20+ years, they can charge premium price on them, if someone want to replace the ones they had

I'm sure you'd be safe to run with out the splash guards, plus when you go Mudding in that Quigley, you wouldn't get the red Tenn mud caked up on the back side of the rotor.

That Fordparts.com link is very misleading, what they have listed, and in most cases, can not be found. Not so much for this item, but for a lot of other parts.

IMHO disc brakes don't really benefit from inner splash shields---they were designed with shedding water in mind---they originated in the aircraft industry.

I have an '88 van and it has them as well.

The shields mostly help to keep snow & slush off the brakes as that can cause problems once you stop and park your vehicle and that stuff freezes solid. It also keeps water off and that can cause problems if the water hits hot rotors and also rocks and such as they can wedge themselves into spots their not supposed to be.

Now does anything like this happen. It could but isn't very common so that's why most people with vehicles without shields or missing shields don't have problems with them not being there.

LOL, I didn't know it was broken. I bought the truck with "new" ball joints in it.
Looking at it this morning, it appears that the last mechanic? broke it putting it in.

Well that might be however to "break a ball joint" you've got to be Superman---or a grouchy woman?

If you'll be keeping this van it might be a good idea to replace all four ball joints if its in the budget---or if the others aren't in good shape either.

Besides being a safety issue bad ones will eat tires. Buy Moog from Amazon---cheapest place I've found.
